The Red Eye

On December 5, 1945, five TBM Avenger torpedo bombers took off from Fort Lauderdale for a three-hour exercise called “Navigation Problem Number One,” and the hop went as smoothly as the previous 18 that day. The leader, Lt. Charles Taylor, was an experienced aviator with around 2,500 hours and a Pacific combat tour behind him. Then they got lost. The flight became hopelessly disoriented and its radio transmissions grew fainter as it drifted out to sea. Ground stations could hear the radio chatter growing more anxious as the afternoon wore on. The National Archives account adds the detail that gives me chills: the sun set, the weather deteriorated, and the flight was still lost, now critically low on fuel. A Martin PBM Mariner flying boat was sent to search, and it radioed once and was never seen again, with all 13 aboard

6 Aircraft, 27 men, all disappeared on one stormy night. And this is before the term "The Bermuda Triangle" was ever coined.

When the cabin crew go all out whilst on a layover in a luxury hotel in the Caribbean, the hotels guests get so angry with their bad behaviour that they report them to the airline. But the consequences of that may just affect everyone when the airline is forced to cancel the flight altogether, leaving everyone stranded.

Restraining dangerous passengers is something no cabin crew ever wants to deal with. Being trapped in an enclosed aircraft with someone who is threatening safety is scary.

Recently, a member of the flight crew had to be restrained after stabbing the captain with a crash axe and attempting to take control of the aircraft. That is a definite cause for restraint. But sometimes you have to think outside the box and look at the individual passenger causing trouble. Could it be something else causing the behaviour other than ill intent? A diabetic in need of sugar? Mental health issues? Or perhaps a drug abuse problem. In which case, is there a better way to stop the passenger causing injury to himself or others?

In this episode, we hear the true story of a flight crew who were about to restrain a passenger who looked like he was trying to access the flight deck, until one flight attendant noticed something that changed the way they treated him.

When the hot passenger on board becomes a disruptive passenger!

We're back with another passenger behaving badly story today and we loved the twist at the end!

Passengers board a plane for many reasons. A single plane can hold honeymooners, stag and hen dos, families, dream vacationers, people moving to a different country, pilgrims, and business travellers. People also fly for sad reasons, visiting a sick loved one, a death in the family or leaving a broken relationship. It's one of the reasons I used to ask my cabin crew to chat a little with their passengers during service - to see if anyone needed a little extra attention, help celebrate or provide comfort.

The person who donated this story told us that this passenger that boarded their flight was a firm favourite with all the crew. He was kind, full of fun and flying back to visit the island he was born on 94 years ago. He touched the lives of all the crew that day for many reasons.

When the tragedy of 9/11 occured, airline crews were displaced all over the world. In the USA, anyone who was travelling on a standby or companion ticket was told they wouldn't be flying home any time soon! The aviation industry came to a standstill.
