My surfing coach showed me how to do proper pop-ups on a surfboard lying on couch cushions about three and a half years ago. He filmed me and then compared the film to videos of pro surfers popping up on their boards. It was easy to see what changes I needed to make. It ends up that when an athlete repeats a specific athletic movement correctly 10,000 times, they will master the movement and be able to perform it at will without giving any thought to it. Ten thousand pop-ups seemed like such a monumental task, especially at the beginning when I sucked at it. But I did the math and figured that if I just did ten every morning, I would accomplish the goal in about three years. This past week, the waves have been solid, and I’ve been surfing well. Yesterday, I noticed my pop-ups have become smooth and seamless. I’ve completed ten thousand pop-ups. I can’t tell you how many times I didn’t feel like doing my exercises along the way.

When we remain in devotion to Will during Divine Rage, the string on the Bow of Sagittarius begins to draw. The more intense the struggle, the more tension on the bow. And then the most remarkable thing happens at what always seems to be the last second. When I am sure that I am at my wit’s end…that a particular moment will be my last-ditch effort to see something through to the end…when I am sure that I am about to give up… I go for it one last time…the Archer can no longer bend the bow any further… And the Arrow of Sagittarius is released.

What is a True Muse? The Muse infuses me with passion, drive, and creativity. The Muse makes me want to be the best man I can be. Initially, I found the Muse in the ocean, in the waterfalls, in the forest, on top of mountains, and in the desert. But when I found her within myself, I opened myself up to a whole new universe.

Perspective is everything. Not that long ago, many of you remember how mangled my face was after that wipeout at Impossibles.

I spent 3 hours in surgery that day. But instead of being upset about the situation, I focused on the beauty of that surgeon’s delicate little fingers as she stitched over 50 stitches into my head. I focused on the beauty of my friend, Sean, who helped me from the ocean to the car and drove me to the hospital. I focused on the beauty of this Island and how it has everything I could desire for my family and me to thrive. And wouldn’t you know it? I was back in the water in a week, and now you can’t even tell I was injured. Seeking beauty and reveling in gratitude is better than a shit-ass attitude every day of the week.

I used to think that love was something I felt in my heart. I’ve discovered that love is something I DO. Love, especially Agape Love, is an act of WILL that includes unconditional acceptance, devotion, and faithfulness. It is an ACTION, not an EXPERIENCE.

Somewhere between 12-15 years ago, I realized that government is a system of slavery, that disengaging from the system was essential to finding my way in this life.  Hundreds of frenemies accused me of being a traitor, and while I didn’t disagree with them, it took me a while to get up and leave the Death Star ( the crazy multiverse version where the Storm Troopers believe they are Luke Skywalker).

Everyone and their dog paddle out to surf in easy conditions. The low cost of entry attracts the masses. The masses are asses. If I want to get lots of practice at surfing, I will find much more open ground when the conditions are shitty, dangerous, or flat.

Practicing in poor, dangerous, or flat conditions is the key to up-leveling my performance in perfect conditions (big enough to keep the “other” kooks at bay - meaning I’m a kook to some surfers). The rewards of The Great Work show up during the good times.

It is practiced ALL the time…with emphasis during poor, dangerous, or flat conditions. The Dark Night of the Soul brings pain and misery. Overcoming pain and misery leads to an expanse of beauty. I’m here for you, my fair-weathered friends…especially in stormy weather. XOXO

Riptides and currents are like raging rivers in the ocean. Sometimes they are so strong that it is impossible to paddle directly against them and make way. Often they can drag the ignorant surfer into serious harm’s way. Ignorance is not your friend in these situations. By simply realizing the strength and direction of the rip, the savvy navigator can paddle at an angle that releases themselves from the grip of doom. The surfer can make their way to the desired destination from that point.

What applies to one thing applies to many. Having a relationship with actuality (what is actually happening) and interacting with truth as the greatest version of ourselves (a fantastic attitude and maximum effort) is the tried and true formula for success in every area of life. Fuck your fantasies…Kill your CULTure. Blessings, my friends!

For nearly 50 years, I dreamed of being a surfer and didn’t take the necessary steps to realize my dream. Over the past three years, incredible surfers invited me to Fiji, the Mentawais, Samoa, G-Land, and many other iconic locations.

The fact that somehow this surf community has welcomed me with open arms is as rewarding as it gets for this surfing fool. And I can promise you, the audience, I am not embraced for my skill level.

Unfortunately, courage is not possible without fear. Never let my perceived lack of fear convince you that I haven’t been filled with terror my whole life. The audience sees me drop into double overhead waves, calmy and cool as a cucumber. Very few see the hours spent falling like a kook on waves twice that size.

How often do we dream of a world where our problems have disappeared, rather than dreaming of ways to develop the strength to welcome and overcome problems precisely as they arrive in actuality?

It may sound like I’m beating a dead horse as I continue to do these podcasts and write these descriptions. The message is quite simple, yet I am called to say it in as many different ways as possible…for if it touches just one extra soul…I honor my life purpose.

When our goals are NOUNS (people, places, or things), we are DEAD…lifeless…living in a PROGRAM. For most of my life, I imagined that if I had the perfect wife, or the perfect income, or lived in the ideal place, had the perfect house, car, clothes, friends…THEN I would be somebody SIGNIFICANT…THEN I would be HAPPY. It’s happy, alright…a bunch of happy horseshit.

There is another way. I can explore all the various WAYS OF BEING that I can BECOME. I get to pick and choose which ones are in alignment with the greatest version of myself and which ones are out of alignment…and embody the version that makes my heart sing.

Next, I can get to work having a relationship with what is happening in front of my face…right here, right now. Who is having that relationship? The ONE that I am becoming. And life turns into a verb. Moving faster than the speed of light…timeless…eternal…moving at the speed of NOW. When the moment and the man I choose to become are in ACCORD…the results are mind-blowing…earth-shattering…everything seems like a miracle.
