  • Episode 166: 5 Ways to Stay Motivated While Working Remotely

    Send us Fan Mail

Sometimes, it’s hard to stay motivated. If you feel like you are losing your focus on achieving your goals, listen in as Janine shares 5 ways to stay motivated while working remotely.

    1. Start with your why; however that looks like.
    2. Set a large goal – for businesses, you can always use an income goal. Doing this can help you work backward, and if you can work backward from somewhere, then you can strategically plan how you’re going to get there.
    3. Set 6-weekly/3-monthly goals – we can’t get somewhere if we can’t visualize it.
    4. Give everything a date – this will keep you motivated to get the task done.
    5. Take a break – sometimes, all we need is to step away.

  • How do I write for clients?

    Send us Fan Mail

Before you write for clients, you have to learn first the steps you need to take to start the work. Here are some tips from Janine!

    Key points in this episode:

    • Importance of setting up a discovery call
    • Things you need from the clients after the discovery call and before you write for clients
    • What is a brand guide or style guide?
    • Importance of having a brand guide
    • Elements of a brand guide
    • Janine is sharing a handy questionnaire for your new clients to help you visualize your client’s brand
    • Determining your client’s target audience and direct competitors

    What Is A Style Guide?

When you first talk to your client, you’re going to want to ask for a brand guide and a style guide.

A style guide is like a policy but if your clients don’t have one they need a questionnaire.

When you receive the brand guide look at it.

But if they don’t have one, let’s help them create one by sending over a questionnaire. This is a template you might want to keep handy because this won’t be the last time you need it. Ask them questions like:

    • What are some words to stay away from?
    • If your customer was in front of you, what would they look like and how would they act? This will help you visualize the audience
    • Who are your direct competitors?

Why do we want to know their direct competitors? Because, as a writer, you don’t want to cite direct competitors in your work.

Also, take time to look at your client’s past work. Check out the language, the tense, etc. This will help you write directly for that client.

  • Episode 163: Pricing Strategies and Tips for Selling Your Service With Francielle Silva

    Send us Fan Mail

A lot of content writers struggle when it comes to pricing. They are great at what they do but they have the employee mindset. The problem is they don’t go out there and get help in improving their sales and marketing skills because these are different skills that they need to acquire. They have the skill to do the job but they don’t have the skill to sell the service. So, we got Francielle joining us today to give her expert pricing strategies and selling your service.

Today’s guest is Francielle Silva. She was born and raised in Brazil but moved to Canada 8 years ago and worked as a caregiver. She has a lot of experience and built a community on Facebook called the Newbies Copywriters & Content Writers.

She started out as a copywriter last year and she is transitioning into a business coach because she loves helping people and she got some who are requesting her service. She used some strategies that work. Now, she is leveling up by focusing as a business and visibility coach to help her clients stay visible on social media.

    • Francielle provides a downloadable pricing guide for our Savvy Nurse Writer members
    • Get the pricing you deserve without chasing away clients
    • Tips for getting testimonials from your clients
    • To charge per hour or not

    Tips for Pricing your Services

When you charge very low, you are also attracting low-paying clients that will not trust you. High-paying clients pay for their time and they want RESULTS.

It’s important to ask your clients before you charge: what do they want to get from your service?

    Don’t charge per hour.

Don’t try to persuade your clients to start off with a service that they don’t have. Just start off with what they want and deliver value.

Don’t just work with start-up companies because they might not sustain the budget to keep working with you all the time. So, it is important to expand your service to established businesses as you grow.

If you keep getting money objections, it’s a red flag for you.

You don’t have to have 10 years of experience to charge a higher rate.

If you want to have consistent clients, you need to be consistent with your business and you need to provide consistent value.

Keep listening to this episode for more tips!

Tips for Getting Testimonials From Your Clients

    1. How are you feeling, what are you struggling with before we start working together?
    2. How was working with me?

    2. Think of something you can delegate to people who might do it better than you
    3. Stuff you don’t know how to do or spending too much time on learning how to do it
    4. Writers can also delegate research. There are some who hate research but love writing so delegating can help them focus on what they love to do.

    Action Things To Do:

Give time to yourself and try to do the following things:

    1. Figure out this week what you’re doing hour to hour to see where your time is doing.
    2. Look and see at that time what you hate to do.

    Send us Fan Mail

Other episodes about pitching you may want to check out, too!

    • Cold pitching
    • Creating a process for your content and pitching
    • Pitching strategies
    • Stand out as a freelancer when pitching your profile

In this episode, we will tackle three things that will help you pitch to stand out in the sea of pitching to editors.

    Episode takeaways:

    • Why pitch?
    • What is a pitch?
    • 3 ways to pitch to editors

     What is a pitch?

A pitch is basically an idea. It is an idea that you tell someone who has a decision-making effort to say “yes.” Those decision-makers are usually editors or marketing managers or someone like them in a company.

3 Ways to Pitch to Editors

    Write A Clear Subject Line.
Think about some ways to spruce up your subject line to get your potential client to open it.

Tip: There are some subject line generators out there that you can just Google search to gain more ideas.

Hook Clients On The First Line Of Your Email.
Think about the reader, too. What would you like to read about?

    Personalize It.
You can have a template. You do want to do some work on pitching. That shows that you’ve done your research about the company and that you care about what the readers want to read about.

    Bonus tips
Keep your pitch short and concise and the body of your pitch should be about 2-3 sentences or bullet points.

Follow-up. The fortune is in the follow-up. If you follow up with your potential clients, you are likely to get a response.

When I started as a writer, I had no idea I needed an editor. So, when I submitted my first pieces, the red line go lower. Talk about imposter syndrome; it really lifts up when I was like “maybe writing is not for me.” But really, I needed an editor and every writer does.

    • Who can you use as an editor

     Editing Tools

    • Grammarly
    • Hemingway App
    • Pro Writer

Pro Tips To Consider Before Hiring An Editor

Read your blog out loud. It will help see where you need to add the punctuation or remove things that don’t make sense.

If you have somebody in your life whom you know a good writer, or even a good reader, don’t hesitate to ask for feedback. Or, read the blog over before submitting it to your client.

When I hired my first editor, she was so helpful. It was worth it for me to hire someone to edit my work for my anxiety level so I won’t be getting these red lines.

Looking To Write For The Savvy Nurse Writer Job Boards?

If you want to write for our job boards, I have vetted editors there. Your work will always be edited before we send it to the client. I also suggest that you always look at the edits that they do even if it’s from a high-quality editor because you will learn from it and it will help you become a better writer.
