UW professors Jean Dennison (Osage) and Josh Reid (Snohomish) will lead a discussion with local Native leaders Lisa Wilson (Lummi) and Melvinjohn Ashue (Hoh) on Indigenous sovereignty, treaty rights, and urban planning.Jean Dennison is a citizen of the Osage Nation and an Associate Professor of anthropology at the University of Washington. Her book Colonial Entanglement: Constituting a Twenty-First-Century Osage Nation (UNC Press 2012) speaks directly to national revitalization, one of the most pressing issues facing American Indians today. She has also published widely, including pieces in Visual Anthropology, PoLAR, American Indian Quarterly, the American Indian Culture and Research Journal and American Ethnologist. Jean’s current research uses grounded ethnographic methods to study various accountability practices as they manifest throughout the current Osage Nation government. The primary goal of her academic endeavor is to explore how indigenous peoples negotiate and contest the ongoing settler colonial process in areas such as citizenship, governance, and sovereignty.Born and raised in Washington State, Josh Reid (Snohomish) is an associate professor of History and American Indian Studies at the University of Washington. In 2009, he earned his doctorate in history at the University of California, Davis. Yale University Press published his first monograph, The Sea Is My Country: The Maritime World of the Makahs (2015) in the Henry Roe Cloud Series on American Indians and Modernity. It has received awards and acknowledgements from the Organization for American Historians, American Society for Ethnohistory, the Western History Association, and the North American Society for Oceanic History. Dr. Reid currently directs the university’s Center for the Study of the Pacific Northwest and edits the Emil and Kathleen Sick Series on Western History and Biography with the University of Washington Press and the Roe Cloud Series on American Indians and Modernity. He serves on the editorial advisory board of the Pacific Northwest Quarterly and is a Distinguished Speaker for the Western History Association.Melvinjohn Ashue is of the Chalaat people who are part of the Hoh Indian Tribe and was born and raised on the Hoh Reservation. He earned his B.S. in Business and Administration from Haskell Indian Nations University. He has served his tribe and community in a wide variety of roles including ICW caseworker, Higher Education Director, Title VII para-educator, Vice-chairman, Interim Executive Director, Circles of Care Director, at large Council member, and Family services Director. He is currently the Chalaat Development CEO and President. Since he was elected to Council in 2012, he has focused his efforts on Economic Development and Gaming, but has also been actively involved in ICWA, Fishing, Natural Resources, Family Services, and many more committees. He has also participated in NCAI, ATNI, and the annual Centennial Accord.Lisa Wilson is a member of the Lummi Tribe. She is the ESA Manager and Policy Representative for Lummi Natural Resources. She received her Native Environmental Science Degree from the Northwest Indian College. Lisa is passionate about working for her tribe and strives to continue the work of her ancestors in protecting treaty rights.

He is the author of Seattle’s Indigenous Peoples’ Day resolution, Seattle’s resolution calling on Congress to engage in reconciliation with Tribe’s over the Boarding School Era policies, Seattle's resolution to oppose the construction of the Dakota Access pipeline and Seattle's ordinance to divest from Wells Fargo due to their financing of the Dakota Access pipelines. He is the co-founder of the group Mazaska Talks. Soya Jung has been active in the progressive movement for the last 30 years working as a journalist, legislative staff, community organizer, and progressive grantmaker. She has written, researched, and organized on issues of immigration, police accountability, welfare, and progressive philanthropy. At ChangeLab Soya Jung has authored two reports: Left or Right of the Color Line: Asian Americans and the Racial Justice Movement and The Importance of Asian Americans? It’s Not What You Think, created an interactive website on racial capitalism called A Different Asian American Timeline, and co-authored the Asian American Racial Justice Toolkit. Her writing has been published in Othering and Belonging: Expanding the Circle of Human Concern and Kalfou, and cited in places like the Routledge Companion to Asian American Media, ColorLines, and The Guardian. Aneelah Afzali, Esq. is Executive Director of the American Muslim Empowerment Network at the Muslim Association of Puget Sound, a Board Member of the Faith Action Network, and a steering committee member of the WA Immigrant Solidarity Network. A graduate of Harvard Law School, Aneelah left her successful legal career five years ago and has since served as a community activist, interfaith leader, bridge-builder, and justice advocate. She was named one of the 2017 Most Influential People by Seattle Magazine, and recognized as a Rising Star multiple years by Washington Law and Politics.

Co-editor Frank Abe will present images from his new biography of Okada, and join contributors Shawn Wong and Stephen Sumida for a conversation moderated by Tom Ikeda of Densho. "No-No Boy", John Okada's only published novel, centers on a Japanese American who refuses to fight for the country that incarcerated him and his people in World War II and, upon release from federal prison after the war, is cast out by his divided community. In 1957, the novel faced a similar rejection until it was rediscovered and reissued in 1976 to become a celebrated classic of American literature. As a result of Okada's untimely death at age forty-seven, the author's life and other works have remained obscure.This compelling collection offers the first full-length examination of Okada's development as an artist, placing recently discovered writing by Okada alongside essays that reassess his lasting legacy. Our free training will discuss several immigration issues including recent changes to immigration policy under the Trump Administration, how people can qualify for immigration status; protections for victims of crime, unaccompanied youth, and asylum seekers; immigration detention and deportation, and why high quality legal representation for immigrants is particularly important.

The Western Washington chapter of the international SCBWI invites you to come to their 2018-2019 kick-off meeting and program for free. The morning includes an introduction to SCBWI, a presentation on resources for those getting started as well as those who are already published, a QandA, and some time at the end for networking.Our presenter is Jolie Stekly, who teaches the year-long Writing for Children program at the University of Washington. Over the past ten years she has worked with numerous editors, agents, authors, and illustrators to develop programming for conference, retreats, and classes. She was recognized as SCBWI’s 2009 Member of the Year and now welcomes hundreds of first-time conference attendees to the international conference in Los Angeles, helping them make the most of their experience. She holds a master's degree in education, is on the blog team for the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators, and is represented by the literary agent Rosemary Stimola. She writes young adult novels.
