The conceptual self identifies with external experiences, objects, emotions, thoughts, experiences of the body, and personalizes them which creates suffering. When we become conscious of this mechanism a shift in identity takes place from the personal, conceptual self to the impersonal. The sense of 'I' then no longer revolves around experiences and stories, but refers to an abiding of the True essence of ones being, pure consciousness. This is the discovery of freedom.
