The 1996 film Multiplicity starring Michael Keaton (Beetlejuice, Batman) opposite Southern goddess Andie MacDowell (Groundhog Day, Four Weddings and a Funeral) features Keaton as four different versions of his character Doug. Doug is an overworked father with no time for himself. After stepping in to take over for his employees on a construction project at the Gemini Institute, he is noticed by a wacky doctor who takes him on a journey into cloning himself. The hosts discuss which one of Keaton's clones were most crush-able (hint: there's only one who is a feminist) and why critics agree that the movie's plot falls short on MULTIPLE levels.

Hello VHS cadets! Look, Damon Wayans is 1000% comedy gold. HE BRINGS IT. From In Living Colour to 1995's Major Payne. This movie combines the feelings of so many military-summer-camp-esque films of the 90s, like if Heavyweights met In The Army Now. Wayans is worth the watch and the jokes are heavy up top, but the plot comes to a crawling through the mud pace too soon. Oh Major Payne...you will always live fondly in my memories....

The 1996 film Bed of Roses should have been the classic go-to romantic film for the VHS generation. Directed by first-time director Michael Goldenberg, the film starred two of the hottest actors of the 1990s: Mary Stuart Masterson (Benny & Joon, Fried Green Tomatoes) and Christian Slater (Interview With A Vampire, Heathers). The film follows the relationship of an eccentric (read: stalker) Manic Pixie Dream Boy and a workaholic with a dark past. Although the characters appeared to critics in the 90s as "two sad sacks... so earnest so sweet", the hosts take a different (and more modern) approach analyzing this complex and toxic relationship.

The now-classic Christmas movie “Jingle All The Way” features a hard-working dad played by Arnold Schwarzenegger go head-to-head with another dad played by Sinbad over an exclusive toy. With a release date that coincided with the Tickle Me Elmo craze, the film feels like a critique of American overconsumption and the parenting mentality that led to the ongoing “participation trophy” rhetoric around millennial childhoods. The film’s release was met with its fair share of controversy (mainly around the script, which may or may not have originated in the mind of a high school teacher). The hosts discuss that controversy as well as the film’s hint of racial and class divide and its surface-level critiques of 1990s American Christmas culture.

Robin Williams had a knack for playing the one person that no one else in the world could understand. From his bizarre beginnings as an alien on the sitcom “Mork & Mindy” to his kooky portrayal of real-life doctor “Patch Adams”, Robbins had the ability to capture what it was about us that felt weird and unique. The 1996 film “Jack” is no exception. Directed by Francis Ford Coppola, the silly film –written by the man now responsible for “The Purge” franchise– follows a ten-year-old struggling with a genetic disorder that makes him appear to look four times his age. The hosts discuss appearances by JLo and Diane Lane as well as Robin’s performance. An impossible premise masquerading as a feel-good hit, the hosts question whether “Jack” is instead one of the darkest existentialist films in recent decades.

Robin Williams embodied all that was great about the 1990s. But his unbridled physical humor paired with a natural ability to bring warmth to the screen were both missed in the 1999 drama “Bicentennial Man” in which Williams plays an android. The film opens with a slightly weird obsession with a child named Lil’ Miss and ends with Robin’s character marrying Lil’ Miss’ youthful doppelganger granddaughter. The hosts discuss the trademark Williamesque performance and critique the lengthy harried-paced script (based on a novel by Issac Asimov, and written by “Matilda” writer Nicholas Kazan).

The late-90s film “The Other Sister” features Juliette Lewis and Giovanni Ribisi as a mentally-challenged couple navigating life in the big city. Directed by Garry Marshall (“Pretty Woman”, “The Princess Diaries”), the film was marketed as a rom-com with a twist. Diane Keaton plays a wealthy Republican WASP-type mom that smothers her daughter (Juliette Lewis’ character) all while looking chic AF. Lewis’ portrayal garnered all the wrong attention from critics when the film opened and the host dive into those reactions as well as more contemporary takes. The hosts discuss context, sensitivity and acting skills in comparing this film to other portrayals of people with intellectual disabilities (“Forrest Gump”, “Radio”, “I Am Sam”).
