On today's episode, James and Colton tackle some questions that have been piling up regarding supplements. The supplement industry has been a topic of discussion on prior episodes of the Silver Bullet Podcast but today we wanted to tackle your specific questions. We cover 7 different supplementation questions submitted and discuss whether or not they are viable options for the general public and why you should or shouldn't invest your hard earned money on these products. Hope you enjoy!
As a continuation of our last episode talking about food marketing, James and Colton dive into the physiological and psychological reasons why you crave junk food. We all have something we crave... sweets, fast food, chips, etc... but why do you always get a craving for the same thing? Or maybe the same type of thing? There's more to it than just an emotional connection. There's a physiological event happening. Listen in!
The food industry thrives on your emotional interaction with their products. They use key words like Organic, Paleo, All-Natural, Gluten Free, Fat-Free, Locally Raised, etc... to ultimately make you decide that you need the product. While there are obviously many benefits to consuming high quality foods that have some of these labels, the food industry is cashing in on your lack of education in this department (ie: foods now have labels that say "gluten-free" when the original product never had gluten in the first place). James and Colton talk about the marketing of food and how catch phrases have a double edged sword effect with your health. Listen in and learn how marketing has changed in the past 10 years and decide for yourself where you think it is headed. Oh, and If there is anything to take away from this episode let it be this- "even though you can make a cake with all paleo ingredients, in the end, it is still a cake." Enjoy!
I'm sure there are a few things you have heard in the health and/or fitness space that made your mind wonder, "that's not true, is it?" Lot's of old wives' tales surrounding how to build muscle, how to lose body fat, how to look your best, etc... many of them may in fact hold some truth. But many of them are downright nonsense. James and Colton google "top fitness myths" and have discussion on each one they select. Some of their conversation may surprise you!
James and Colton continue their conversation about root problems for health. If you didn't listen to episode #034, they talked about not treating symptoms of health issues but the problem that created it. In today's episode, we move inside your circle of influence and talk about conversations that need to be had with spouses and significant others. From years of experience, we can tell you that the biggest conversation that needs to be had is the one with your spouse- or the person you spend the most time with. If you two aren't on the same page, results are hard to come by.
Sounds kind of harsh, doesn't it? What's your problem? Most times if we hear this question it's in regard to our poor attitude or expression we carry while amongst friends or family. But that's not the direction we're going today. What's your biggest problem that has led you to where you are today? What is the problem that made you gain weight? What is the problem that has led your inconsistency with your training? What is your biggest problem? Yes- this is a mindset oriented episode. James and Colton talk about the new member process and how we no longer try to "fix" anyones current issues. Rather, we look at what caused them (the problem) and eradicate that first and foremost. There's many reasons for this and it only came from trial and error. Listen in if you want a challenge to take away!
One of the biggest hurdles we face as coaches (specifically coaches who practice outside of cultural norms), is the fact that intensity leads to all the results you could want. Need to lose 20 lbs? You need high intensity. Want to build your self esteem? High intensity. Keep a competitive edge? Intensity.. intensity, intensity... Unfortunately we have learned (from our own mistakes) that this fits a specific demographic and doesn't sustain those who are trying to live a healthy lifestyle. Intensity is a stimulus and in order to benefit from that stimulus, you must respect that stimulus. Body, mind and effort must all be in agreement- if we're doing intensity, we're all in. If not, you'll end up going backwards. James and Colton are fired up today trying to answer the golden question "why do people think they NEED intensity to see results?"
The longer we are in this fitness space, the more we learn that food timing can be the "make or break" catalyst for recovery and ultimately, body fat loss. Timing of carbs is crucial for eliminating the possibility of gaining excess fat and promoting muscular recovery. The timing of fat ultimately helps speed up the absorption rate of carbs and protein. And the timing of protein becomes important as we are trying to optimize protein synthesis. Timing, timing, timing.. listen to James and Colton as they discuss nutrient timing and how it can benefit your current training!
Calories in vs. Calories out... that's how you factor weight loss. Since the mid 2000s, counting calories was THE way to lose weight. Nobody took into account what that weight was (fat or muscle) but all that mattered was the scale was going down! The uprising of more natural weight loss methods has shown the devastating affects of this type of weight loss. But, maybe there is a way to benefit from counting calories in a fashion that is unlike the typical understanding? Tune in and listen to James and Colton as they discuss ways to utilize calorie counting if you are trying to lose body fat and lean out!
James and Colton are back with a follow up podcast answering your questions relating to strength camp. Topics covered in this episode range from supplements, to electrolytes, breathing and bracing, lifting shoes, and much more. Tune in and Enjoy!
