The road to sobriety has been a 30 year journey for Tom Schmittler.  That road has been filled with many turns in potholes but somehow Schmitty was able to functionally navigate the path while still abusing alcohol at a level most would see as insane.  Knocking on the devil’s door long enough will eventually call him to answer.  A crash is inevitable when you continue down the road at excessive speeds and that’s what happened to Schmitty.  After hitting bottom Schmitty was given the gift of sobriety and now sees the world to different eyes.

We all have something inside of us that releases itself from time to time. People who have gone through struggles and trials refer to this demon as “The Beast”. The beast rears its head at the most inconvenient times and when you look at the beast in the eyes you can shake you to your core. On this episode Mike and I sit down and discuss possible solutions on how to defeat the beast. We don’t have all the answers but we do know what has worked for us.

Taking it one step further, Dave has chose to be an advocate for safe gun ownership, keeping guns in the hands of those who are capable and deserving while taking guns out of the hands of those at risk. His tireless efforts and belief in the true meaning of the second amendment have led him to the highest levels to advocate for safe gun ownership.

Clark Fredericks has experience suffering on a level that very few can imagine. Growing up in a small town in New Jersey and coming from a middle-class family, Clark saw all the possibilities that life could offer. A chance meeting with a neighbor caused his world to crumble.  Clark tells his story on this episode about how he was targeted, groomed, molested, and ultimately Raped by what townspeople saw as a normal average human being.  Being forced to bear this burden alone Clark turned to self medication and risky behavior to numb his suffering. You can’t have a sound mind without having a sound body. First responders are experts at taking care of others but really bad at taking care of themselves. Linda Yasin has dedicated herself to the betterment of the overall health and wellness of those that take care of us.  Linda is the first responder liaison to Xbody which focuses on a total body health system. First responders work hard at working their bodies but fall short of working their mind.

Very seldomly in this life do we get to hear about history from a participant. Bob Gibson was a young man who was compelled to fight for his country during World War II. He found himself entering into the unknown as he landed on the beach during the D-Day invasion on June 6, 1944.  At 98 years old the memories are as fresh now as when they first happened.  After D-day was over, the war did not stop as Bob went  onto fight in the Battle of The Bulge.  In this episode of The Suffering Podcast, join us as we hear living history, and learn from it so that we can never forget.

Mark Hettinger had a calling to serve others. Entering into a life of service to help others does not mean you are robotic and void of a personal life. Aside from being a great fireman, Marc is also a very proud gay man. This in no way impedes his ability to do the work that is required. We are often taught not to bring our personal lives into our jobs, until our personal lives are viewed by others as different. One’s sexual orientation does not define them, but allows them the ability to take their life experiences and overcome suffering.
