Nicholas Kotar and I discuss the relationship between traditional stories, fairy tales and how they relate to modern understanding of history, as well as how Tolkien's vision of Fantasy proposes a solution for modern storytelling. The Tree can be seen as a symbol of order as it converges into the one, but it can also be seen as order as it separates into the many. The notion that there was an ass, or a donkey, and an ox present at the birth of Christ is not in the Bible, yet it is one of the earliest and most persistent images in the representations of the Nativity even until today. I explore the symbolism surrounding this Christmas tradition and how it shows us the purpose of extra-biblical traditions. It connects with notions of the incarnation, purity and how extreme elements are brought together in Christ. I start by the first verse in Genesis and then follow the tread of symbolism, the pattern of Heaven and Earth all through the Bible and finally into the life of Christ. Looking at the symbolism of the purity laws in the Old Testament. The purity laws in the Bible are not only rules to regulate behavior but are an image of the Cosmos and how we engage with the world. I discuss with Samuel Andreyev who is a Canadian composer living in France. We discuss the question of abstraction and reference in music, the functions of music as well it the state of music today. Samuel has a youtube channel where he analyzes music theory and looks at particular artists and their compositions. https://www.youtube.com/user/temporalfissure Original video: https://youtu.be/tCKNKlJNDVo Support this channel: patreon: https://www.patreon.com/pageauvideos paypal: paypal.me/JonathanPageau website: http://www.pageaucarvings.com facebook: https://www.facebook.com/jonathanpageau twitter: https://twitter.com/PageauCarvings

With Matthieu Pageau we discuss symbolism in the creation story told in Genesis and how it relates to consciousness, the problem of self-reference and how true symbolism usually appears in a fractal structure of microcosms and macrocosm. The problem of science and rationality is that by emphasizing materiality and reason it often struggles with the paradox of self-reference and self-causality, just as it struggles with the problem of the justification for hierarchical structures of value. These two issues are related through the fact of consciousness and self-awareness. Though science struggles to include the consciousness of the viewer in its general calculation, this is something that is done very well in traditional cosmologies through a series of self-replicating patterns which are embedded into each other somewhat like a fractal pattern. The manner in which we dehumanize others in social discourse is broken down and analyzed, and ultimately we see that both sides of the political spectrum use similar dehumanizing tactics without knowing it.
