I grew up working for my dad’s construction company. At one point, he employed an older man who had spent most of his life working for the railroad. This guy knew how to work hard. Hand him a shovel, and things happened. He’s the person that taught me that when you are laying out your work for the day, you should try to do the hardest, least desirable tasks first. So…let’s start with a mea culpa (latin for “my bad”).
Yesterday, I forgot that it was Wednesday. I’m going to blame it on COVID brain – too many consecutive days at home and the calendar starts to blur. In any case, I didn’t even realize I had missed the Wednesday Evening Zoom Hangout until I saw a text asking me if it was still on. Gah! You might think, “No big deal – I never show up for that”. Problem is, I host it.
So, in the interest of small reparations, this week the Wednesday Evening Zoom Hangout will happen today (Thursday, right?), at 7:30 p.m. I’ll include the Zoom link for that hang at the end of this email.
Christmas! So many creative adaptations required! We won’t be able to gather in person, even distanced and outdoors, but we’ll still do something special. Here’s the concept: I think we’re all feeling “the dark” of winter a bit more acutely than usual. One of the powerful themes of Christmas is “light”. Light shows the way, brings courage to those caught up in events beyond their control, shines on those living in darkness…is present in all sorts of unexpected ways. I can explore that, and I will, but what I REALLY want for Christmas is to hear from as many of you as possible about ways you see “light” in the world. Send me your thoughts, poems, reflections, songs, pictures, etc. Ideally, send them in some visual way – sing the song, read the poem into your phone camera, send a photo, take a picture of a reading. The reason the visual aspect is so essential is because that’s how we’re connecting these days, and if you send me a whole bunch of visual ideas, I will edit them all together into what will become our Christmas program. Sort of a “home movie from the community, for the community”, that is all about where we see light in the world. Does that make sense? Any questions, please be in touch. The deadline for submitting materials is Thursday, December 17th. That will give me enough time to put the whole thing together before our scheduled date for “Not Quite Christmas” on December 20th.
The Table Christmas Mailing List: If you want to be included in the mailing list (NOT the email list – the one with actual mailing addresses on it), please respond to this email with your mailing address before this Sunday. The list will be sent out in PDF form only to those that provided addresses.
The Talky Bit – This Sunday I’ll be exploring some (actual) images of how we can reach across what might feel like great divides in our world and in our lives. We’ll also be taking a quick jaunt to Venice, Italy, in the safest (and cheapest!) way possible. A little winter vacation. We’ll gather here at 10:45 a.m. for music and Community Time, followed by the Talky Bit. I have taken note that the volume was low last week, and will do what I can to remedy that problem. As usual, the Talky Bit will also be available as a podcast later in the week, and will be posted
