  • UVP 176 Team Boycotts New Doc Before She Even Starts
Can the team sabotage a new doctor before they even start? This week on the podcast, Dr. Andy Roark and Stephanie Goss are tackling a letter from the mailbag. A medical director colleague wrote in and shared with the team that they have a doctor coming onboard that has worked previously as a tech in their hospital. Should be a major win, right?? Our medical director says hold your excitement because only now that our new vet has been hired is our Medical Director being informed that the team does not like the new vet. The team says they have a bad attitude; techs have said the vet has had rough handling of patients... but none of this was noted by our Medical Director when the new doctor was a tech, and none of these things have been addressed with the new hire doctor during their previous employment. Sounds like a management headache worth talking through. This is a lively one, let’s get into this…

  • UVP 175 Exactly HOW Do I Talk to A Negative Coworker?
Are you a leader in your practice whose palms sweat and you might completely forget how to say what you need to say when confronting a negative staff member? Dr. Andy Roark and Stephanie Goss are tackling another letter from the mailbag this week. A long time podcast listener wrote in and asked Andy and Stephanie to do some actual role play on how to address a team member who is (and I do quote) “the most pessimistic person on the planet!” Our listener is a manager in a corporate practice who has a negative staff member and they just don’t know WHAT to say or HOW to say it. They are reaching out for help to navigate some crucial conversations because this behavior is just not acceptable. This is a fun one, let’s get into this…

  • UVP 174 Do You Really NEED an online pharmacy?
This week on the podcast, Stephanie Goss is joined by Jenn Galvin, Practice Manager/Practice Owner. Jenn is an Uncharted member with a passion for spreadsheets, inventory and home delivery and she was the first person I thought of to kick this topic around when I saw the letter we got in the mailbag. A manager of a corporate practice wrote in and asked about our take on encouragement from their corporate leadership to begin outsourcing a lot of product off their clinic shelves into their online pharmacy for home delivery. This is a lively one, let’s get into this…

  • UVP 173 I Don’t Like My Boss’ Style
When your direct boss sucks the life out of you, what do you do? This week on the podcast, Dr. Andy Roark and Stephanie Goss are talking through a mailbag letter from a veterinarian who transitioned out of their old practice and into a new one. They love the team, the clients and the work. There is just one problem… the medical director has a polar opposite leadership style from our vet friend and it is sucking the life out of everything at work. Let’s get into this…

RETAIN YOUR TEAM: SPEAK THE LANGUAGES OF APPRECIATION IN YOUR WORKPLACE
Have you ever given your team an extra weekend off, a holiday bonus, a pizza party, or a coffee run for a job well done and still heard rumors of dissatisfied team members? Have you wondered how anyone could not feel appreciated? You’re not alone!
The truth is, there’s no single strategy to make your entire team feel appreciated and engaged. Each person has their own appreciation language, and most of them don’t have anything to do with gifts or food.
You can be the leader of a happier, more satisfied team, and it starts with understanding how each person in your practice feels the most valued.
Practice owner Dr. Tracy Sands is going to teach you about the languages of appreciation and how they can help you motivate, train and retain your staff. In this 2-hour, LIVE, interactive workshop you will learn how to:
Recognize and speak each of these languages
Find out the appreciation languages of each team member (and yourself!)
Utilize at least 3 new ways to be sure that your employees understand what their value is to you
Gain an added benefit for yourself: Feeling the appreciation of your team
Be the boss everyone wishes they had! Create the positive culture you want to work in!
Join us on Saturday, May 21 from 2-4 PM ET/11 AM – 1 PM PT for $99 (FREE for Uncharted Members!) Members must still be registered to attend.
All Uncharted Veterinary Community Workshops are LIVE! You will be able to ask your instructor questions that help you address your practice’s unique problems. This will not be 2 hours of silent screen time. Gear up for interactive, fun learning!

  • UVP 172 I'm The Boss Now, Can We Still Be Friends?
When you become the boss, can you still be friends with your team? This week on the podcast, Dr. Andy Roark and Stephanie Goss are talking through a mailbag letter signed “Another Lonely Manager”. This manager transitioned from being a tech to being the boss and they are struggling with two questions - Can you expect to continue to be friends with your co-workers when you are promoted and become their boss? And how do you deal with feeling like a lonely leader at work? Let’s get into this…

  • UVP 171 The Entire World Is On Backorder
This week on the podcast, Stephanie Goss is joined by Nicole Clausen of Veterinary Care Logistics. These days, it feels like the whole world is on backorder. Both Stephanie and Nicole are shocked and surprised regularly, at how many practices they talk to that have absolutely ZERO plan for what to do when things run out and aren’t available. In this episode, we are going to laugh, nerd out about inventory, practice management software and home delivery/online pharmacies. We are going to discuss what we can do in the moment when things run out (because even with the best systems in the world, humans happen). And best of all, we discuss what we can do to prepare for the future to minimize the impact of backorders on our patients, clients and teams. Let’s get into this…

  • UVP 170 (HOF) Making Staff Meetings Worth It
This week on the podcast, Dr. Roark and Stephanie tackle an email from the mailbag. We received a note from a multi-site Medical Director who is feeling very frustrated with the way that their practice managers are running team meetings. Meetings happen once a month and seem to have become a two hour laundry list of things to lecture at the team about, sometimes the same topics over and over. Our medical director is wishing that the meetings would become something that the team not only wants to have but look forward to leading! Let’s get into this.

  • UVP 169 The Struggle Of Modernizing An Older Practice
This week on the podcast, Dr. Andy Roark and Stephanie Goss are talking through a question that came in through the mailbag from a friend and colleague of theirs. This DVM is thrilled to have purchased their own practice. They are making a shift from managing multiple locations with multiple DVMs at each practice into a much smaller, rural one DVM practice however and they are facing some challenges. The medicine, the facilities, the technology has all been in place for a quite awhile and our DVM friend has some big plans to kick it up a notch and shift things into the next gear. They are struggling with how to tackle the big changes that lie ahead. Let’s get into this…

  • UVP 168 The Team is Mad When I Won’t Cover For Them
This week on the podcast, Dr. Andy Roark and Stephanie Goss are sharing a conversation they recently had with a group of managers who was struggling with something that feels familiar to us all at this point. These managers are short handed. And a lot of them came into their roll from the team side so they have the skills to fill in on the floor when needed. Their teams are really getting frustrated and/or angry with them when they refuse to cover gaps in the schedule in order to get their own jobs done including things like trying to hire, interview and payroll. It feels like the ultimate rock and a hard places conversation. Let’s get into this…

This week on the podcast, Dr. Andy Roark and Stephanie Goss are walking through their take on a conversation that Stephanie recently had with a fellow manager.
