The pressures for data exchange and interoperability have converged on the concept of a health data utility. At the DirectTrust conference, Angie Bass, Chief Strategy Officer at Velatura, describes this as a "unifying force" that is "supported like a public utility" to exchange data among health care facilities.
However, the business opportunities no longer lie simply in exchanging data, which is a rock-bottom requirement. Instead, vendors and clients alike have to find value in data: how to benefit providers, patients, etc. Bass talks of data as part of business intelligence, and of data remediation and recovery.
