The father of six-year-old Monica Sathege, who died after allegedly consuming snacks bought from a local spaza shop in Naledi, Soweto, in October 2024, says he is relying on the South African Police Service to bring closure to his family. Joseph Sathege was reacting to a damning report by the Public Protector, which found that Gauteng municipalities failed to implement adequate control measures to enforce food safety and hygiene regulations at spaza shops. The Financial Sector Conduct Authority says employers who fail to meet their pension fund obligations has more than tripled increasing from 23 funds and 5 430 employers in April 2023 to 75 funds and 16 556 employers as of February 2026. Current data suggests that the severity of arrears is increasing, with late payment interest increasing by 21.5%, compared with a 9% increase in the capital portion of arrears. This indicates that outstanding contributions are remaining unpaid for longer periods and continuing to accumulate interest. Chefs with Compassion - a nonprofit organisation founded in 2020 to tackle food waste and hunger is calling on the South Africa public to help it reach a remarkable milestone of going beyond 10 million meals through this year's #67000 litres Challenge. The group has already served over nine Million, 550-thounsand meals since 2020 and is now calling on home cooks, corporate teams, professional chefs, hotels, restaurants and catering companies across the country to help fill pots to help feed the less fortunate this Mandela Day. The African Transformation Movement (ATM) has called on Parliament's Portfolio Committee on Social Development to urgently investigate what it describes as a growing crisis of fathers being denied access to their children and the impact this has on children, families and society as a whole. ATM says South Africa is confronted with a silent crisis that receives far too little attention from policymakers and legislators and that parliament can no longer afford to remain silent while children are being denied meaningful relationships with their fathers. KwaZulu-Natal's conservation authorities have raised concerns over rising elephant populations in key reserves, warning of an ecological crisis if urgent action is not taken. Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife has called for the relocation of hundreds of elephants. It says elephant populations have exceeded the parks' ecological carrying capacity, in various reserves across KZN, necessitating the removal of over a thousand elephants. But there are concerns that culling may become unavoidable. The families of the twenty one young people who died at Enyobeni tavern in June 2022 are calling on the Director of National Prosecutions to strengthen their case when criminal proceedings are instituted against those found responsible for the death of the Enyobeni tavern victims. The presiding magistrate in the inquest  Magistrate Mkhululi Lomandili found that tavern owner Vuyokazi Ndevu, manager Siyakhangela Ndevu, SAPS Sergeant Thabisa Kondile, Eastern Cape liquor board senior inspector Zuko Lizani and former employee at the tavern Thembisa Diko are liable for the tragic loss of lives. The families say, while this is justice being done for their children's lives, they are bracing for a long road ahead...Meanwhile, The National Liquor Traders says the findings of the inquiry in the Enyobeni tavern case mark an important step in the pursuit of accountability and maintains that the tragedy should never have happened. Protests in Ratanda last week left several people injured and resulted in multiple fatalities during volatile clashes between law enforcement and residents, who were protesting against prolonged water shortages in the area. This week, KZN Department of Social Development MEC Mbali Shinga welcomed the newest members of the Department ,social workers, Child and Youth Care Workers, and Community Development Practitioners ready to serve on the frontlines. 102 social workers have been recruited and the department says this is milestone and that it is investing in the people who protect the most vulnerable in society.
