International concerns of a protracted conflict between Israel and Palestinian militant groups are growing. The Israeli military has been pounding Gaza with artillery fire and air strikes since Monday, in response to persistent Hamas rocket-fire from the enclave. The United Nations Security Council will hold its third meeting in less than a week on Sunday - the first open session after two closed-door meetings failed to produce a Council product despite the escalation in violence. Sherwin Bryce-Pease reports.

Another jobs bloodbath is on the cards as the SA Bureau of Standards prepares to retrench over 150 workers. This comes barely two months since the country lamented the mass retrenchment of over 600 workers by the SABC. The country's unemployment rate currently stands at more than 28 per cent. It's understood retrenchments would help the financially-challenged institution save costs by up to 150-million rand. Phanuel Shuma and Molemo wa Mothoa filed this report...
