Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in South Africa account for more than 98 percent of businesses, employing between 50 and 60 percent of the country's workforce across all sectors, and are responsible for a quarter of job growth in the private sector. However, in 2020, almost half of the SMEs were forced to shut down due to the lockdown as the result of the coronavirus pandemic. According to a report by the World Health Organisation (WHO) 3-point-3 million deaths across the globe yearly result from harmful use of alcohol. Approximately 25 percent of the deaths in the age group 20-39 years are alcohol-related.
