Summer is coming! You know what that means? It's time to glow up. So join me in what I'm coining "Operation Back to Baddie." If the winter months have done a number on you, I'm right there with you. But I'm not just going to say "time to glow up" without an action plan!

Birthday's are the best excuse for some reflection. And mine is on the 27th! Shout out to all my Taurus girlies out there.

It's Black Maternal Health Week! According to a 2021 study put out by the CDC, Black women are 2.6 times more likely to die in childbirth compared to White women. Today's guest, Dr. Lailah Kara-Newton, is doing something major to change the system that got us here.

Dr. Lailah Kara Newton is the Co-Founder and Chief Medical Officer of Aster, a new company with a goal to transform prenatal and postnatal care. After a traumatic birth story that left her feeling unheard and frustrated, Dr. Lailah knew that the system that was meant to care for her, failed her and her baby.

And as a doctor, she knew it was not a personal failing of any of her caretakers. Urgent needs slipped through the cracks because the system is broken. So, she teamed up with her sister to create Aster, a patient management platform designed to stop these situations from happening.

How many Black pilates instructors have you had? Personally, I've never felt totally represented in the pilates space. I've even had trouble re-entering the space because I felt uncomfortable as the only Black person in the room in the past.

Today's guest, Sonja R. Herbert, had an experience that seemed divinely orchestrated so that she could bridge that gap. Her very first pilates instructor was Black and her peers in that space were as well. Because of that, Sonja was hyper aware of how few Black pilates instructors she was meeting outside of that environment.

So Black Girl Pilates was born out of a real need to bring Black pilates instructors together. She intentionally created this space specific for Black instructors, not generally people of color. As a result, she's seeing Black women in the pilates space becoming more visible, more confident, and creating their own programs.

Talk therapy is all the rage. But our body is sending signals all day, every day. So what do we do when talking about our emotions is not enough? Well today, you're in for a treat because I'm joined by Somatic Coach, Yuritzy Gomez Serrano.

If you tuned in last week, you know I just completed the egg freezing process for the third (and final) time. This week, I had the pleasure of sitting down with Dr. Jackson-Bey — the doctor that guided me through the whole experience.

She's answering questions that I couldn't in the last episode. Because while I can tell you what it felt like, I don't have all the degrees and certifications necessary to give you the science and break down the facts. This episode is diving deep into the who, what, why and how of egg freezing.

But we're going even deeper than egg freezing today. I wanted to get a fuller picture of fertility at large. What can we do to preserve our fertility? How are Black and Brown women treated differently when it comes to women's health? Does birth control actually reduce our fertility? What about men's fertility? The unfortunate truth is, fertility is a subject that many people push aside for too long. So even you don't want kids anytime soon, it's important to think about these things now.

A huge takeaway from this conversation is the importance of choosing a doctor you feel comfortable with. When I was going through the egg freezing process, it was incredibly vulnerable. Freezing your eggs can be such an intimidating process. From confronting your own fertility to injecting yourself without a medical degree, it's an intense process.

But for many women, including myself, the option to freeze our eggs is not something we're willing to pass up. Now that I'm nearing the end of my egg freezing journey, I want to be transparent about the process.

So whether you're considering freezing your own eggs and you're overwhelmed with information or you're done with the process too, this episode is for you. Because this isn't a topic that's openly discussed very often!

There are things no one tells you. The injections burn, the hormones are intense, and I think everyone has a right to know what they're in for. You don't need to spend hours scouring blogs to prepare yourself - I've got it all laid out for you here.

With all that being said, it's so worth it. There are some really cool, rewarding parts of the process. I personally loved being able to watch as my eggs grew. I don't know about you, but when I think "beauty," the first thing I think of is the face. When we wake up every morning and look at the mirror, our eyes set the tone. Today's guest, Dr. Chaneve Jeanniton, is an oculofacial plastic surgeon and two time founder.

First, she founded Brooklyn Face and Eye, a boutique practice that focuses on celebrating the patient's features. Talking to Dr. Chaneve about her work in plastic surgery was so refreshing because she doesn't believe in the anti-aging movement. Do you ever find yourself taking random supplements that are being hyped up on Tiktok? Or maybe you've been really tempted to jump on the Ozempic train lately. Whatever health fad is claiming our attention right now, it's important to get grounded in the science behind the decisions we're making.

Today I'm joined by Dr. Ashley Griffith, clinical pharmacist and founder of KIHS  Wellness. Dr. Ashley's mission is to keep it healthy and simple by taking an integrative approach to serving her community's physical wellness.

Right now, it feels like everyone and their mother is talking about semaglutides. It feels like they're being talked about as if they're miracle drugs. And here's the thing - they might be miracle drugs for some people! But nuance is being left out of the conversation, and Dr. Ashley is giving it to us straight.

We're getting into specifics. Who are semaglutides for? What kind of dosage should someone who is trying to lose weight be on Vs. someone with diabetes? How long should a person be on semaglutides?

And then we're talking supplements. It might feel like whichever supplements you elect to take aren't a big deal. After all, you can just pick them up off the counter at CVS. No big deal! But supplements can actually have serious side effects and we should take the decisions we make about supplements just as seriously as any other drug.
