  • Can going caffeine free cold turkey fix your sleep?
About the episodeThis week on the podcast, Rose makes Eve go caffeine free for a fortnight. Caffeine has become universal in our lives. We use caffeine to wake us up in the morning, we meet friends for a coffee at lunch. We eat caffeinated desserts and drink coffees at the end of meals. Coffee is delicious, stimulating and cultural but it also has a multitude of side effects - addiction, anxiety, stress, insomnia, digestive issues, and high blood pressure. There’s also growing research to suggest that coffee, rather than providing us with energy, limits our energy levels and promotes adrenal fatigue. So, how will going two weeks without caffeine reduce Eve’s stress and improve her overall sleep and energy levels? Will caffeine withdrawal prove too much for our host? Or do the benefits of coffee simply outweigh the negatives? Let’s find out. The Challenge: Eve must go caffeine free for two weeks. Paying close attention to her sleep, energy and stress levels. About the hostsEve Kalinik is a nutritional therapist and author. Previously working in fashion and PR, Eve later studied nutrition and set up her own nutritional practice in London. Eve regularly hosts interactive workshops, talks and retreats, and she also writes regularly on gut health and nutrition for leading print and online publications. Eve is a registered member of the British Association for Applied Nutrition and Nutritional Therapy (BANT) and the Complementary & Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC). Eve is also the author of several books on gut health, such as her most recent published work: Happy Gut, Happy Mind. Rosemary Ferguson is a nutritionist and a functional medicine practitioner. After a hugely successful career in modeling Rosemary decided to fulfill her passion for nutrition by studying at The College of Naturopathic Medicine. In 2009, Rose qualified as a naturopath and nutritionist, and now runs her own clinic on Harley Street in London. Rose also writes for publications like Vogue, and is co-founder of healthy junk food brand Filth. In 2015, Rosemary authored her book Juice, which features 100 juice recipes to help cope with modern life!Top Quote"This challenge has been a complete revelation. • Is a drop of wine at night really a bad thing?
About the episodeOn today’s episode, Eve sets Rose the challenge of drinking a glass of wine a night. For many, this challenge may seem counterintuitive to a healthy diet but in recent decades our understanding of moderate alcohol consumption has begun to shift. There’s growing research into the beneficial antioxidant levels of wine and the mediterranian diet, which includes two units of alcohol daily and is considered the healthiest on the planet, has been linked to a reduced risk of cancers and better sleep! Studies also show establishing moderate drinking habits can reduce binge drinking at the weekend. So, can a glass of wine a night really really lead to an improved mood, better sleep, and an overall healthier relationship with alcohol? Or is it all just an excuse to open the bottle of pinot noir? Let’s find out. The Challenge: Rose will be required to drink a 125ml glass of red wine daily for two weeks. Rose will take particular note of her mood, her energy, and will track her sleep using a sleep tracker app before and after the challenge. About the hostsEve Kalinik is a nutritional therapist and author. • Is Macro tracking a waste of time?
About the episodeIn this episode, Rose set’s Eve the macro tracking Challenge. Macro tracking is when a person tracks their macronutrients daily - writing down everything they eat and drink. Advocates for macro tracking will say monitoring your nutrients can improve a person’s understanding of their own diet, highlight the nutritional value of food, and can help with weight loss. But skeptics claim macro tracking is time consuming, oversimplifies nutrition and that it creates an unhealthy relationship with food. So, is macro tracking a diligent and effective way of establishing a balanced diet? Or is it not worth the stress? Let’s find out. The challenge: For two weeks, Eve will have to track her diet using My Fitness Pal. Throughout the challenge Eve will take note of how much time she spends daily macro tracking. Eve will also take note of how the challenge impacts her level of stress and whether it has an effect on her relationship with food. About the hostsEve Kalinik is a nutritional therapist and author. Previously working in fashion and PR, Eve later studied nutrition and set up her own nutritional practice in London. • Do YOU need to go on a digital detox?
About the episodeOn this week’s episode, Eve sets Rose the digital detox challenge! We all know that digital devices are a fundamental part of modern life. However, just as our usage of technology has increased, so has our dependency. There’s growing research to suggest our devices interfere with our self esteem, our sleep, and our stress levels. Can putting boundaries between ourselves and our phones help us feel calmer and more connected? Does limited screen time give us noticeable improvements in our concentration and sleep, or are the differences negligible? Let’s find out. The challenge: For one week, Rose must switch off all digital devices between the hours of 8am and 8pm. Email and messages are permitted during working hours (9-5) but not meal times. All engagement with social media platforms are forbidden and, for one full day, all devices must be switched off. We need to put boundaries around them. By doing that, we'll have a more present, mindful existence." - Eve"When I wakeup in the morning, my phone jolts me into reality.
