Throughout the history of the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival, many traditions have popped up for the festival-goers. Of them, the annual Beer Exchange (established in 2014) has become one of the most notable and long-standing. In this week’s High Five Clip, The What Podcast crew go all the way back to 2019 to revisit an interview at the Beer Exchange with some special guests, including two of the event’s organizers, Kevin Barnes and Mitchell Padgett of Camp Reddaroo.

Brad and Barry dive into the hopsy subject with their guests to learn about the original plans for the Beer Exchange. Barnes and Padgett run through the history of the event, including the first beer they ever exchanged, how the idea came to be, and how it became an annual staple.

Multi-time Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival performer Grace Potter knows what the festival is all about. Having made appearances in 2009, 2011, and 2016, she is a bonafide veteran of the circuit. Along with appearing as a solo act, she has also been to the festival with her former band, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals.

In a flashback segment with The What Podcast, though, she takes the talk away from Bonnaroo, speaking on how much difficult it was to shoot the video for her 2021 song “Release.” She then goes on to explain how director Catherine Fordham helped shape the video around the album, Daylight. She also speaks on what it is like to be a “guinea pig” for other musicians.

Anyone who’s been to the festival will tell you that Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival is about much more than live music. Every attendee has a story, and over the decades, many of those stories intersect. To document the phenomenon, David Bruce launched the "I am Bonnaroo" photography project, which chronicles the many stories from The Farm.

Bruce has been capturing the sights and tales of Bonnaroo for over a decade now, having started this record-keeping mission in 2011. He joins Barry and Lord Taco on this episode of The What Podcast to talk about his journey, as well as the Bonnaroo Yearbook project he kicked off last year.

Jimmy Buffett was a last-minute edition to the Bonnaroo lineup in 2009 after he reportedly reached out to organizers asking to be added. For Brad and Barry, it was a perfect example of the festival being flexible and a great opportunity for them to see an act they would not have otherwise seen. On this episode of The What Podcast, the crew honor the iconic singer-songwriter, who passed away on September 2nd at 76.
