This week on The What Podcast, hosts Barry, Lord Taco, and Bryan embark on their previously-promised quest: diving headfirst into electronic dance music, or EDM. The gang runs through the historical importance of EDM at Bonnaroo and takes a look at the EDM present on the Bonnaroo 2024 lineup.

First up, the guys react to fans recommending they check out the likes of The Mars Volta, Fred Again…, The Tesky Brothers, Half Moon Run, Whyte Fang, and more.

As for the conversation with Ross, multi-year vet discusses how despite each year featuring different types of crowds with varying taste in music, she’s always had an enjoyable experience on the farm. Though her first year involved a good deal of confusion, she soon became a pro, and now works the fest as a concert photographer.

On this episode of The What Podcast, Barry, Lord Taco, and Bryan are joined by guests Trevin Bernarding and Chris Dossett to dive into the return of Bonnaroo day passes and discuss the attendee experience of the Bourbon and Beyond Festival, after we gushed over the lineup last week and talked to Dan, who attended the festival in 2022.

The crew discusses Bourbon & Beyond’s consistently good lineups, but also explores the fest’s attempts to craft an immersive experience (with particular grievances when it comes to lines for water and restrooms). Having been there themselves, Bernardi and Dossett share their opinion on whom they think is the right type of audience for this festival.

After five years in Chattanooga, Tennessee, the Moon River Festival is hitting the pause button for 2024. Chattanooga Mayor Tim Kelly joins hosts Barry, Lord Taco, and Bryan Stone on The What Podcast to discuss possible reasons why.

Despite three sell-out years in Chattanooga, Moon River won’t be returning for what Mayor Kelly admits are complicated reasons. He points to the general impact of inflation, as well as the economics of a festival in 2024.

But while he hopes Moon River will return at some point in the future, he’s not waiting around for the stars to align. “I can tell you behind the scenes, we’re talking to some folks about trying to stand up something local,” Mayor Kelly says, noting the event would focus on “local and smaller artists.” “Because the consolidation of the festival business isn’t helpful to any of this either, because there aren’t enough entrants and competitors.”

But of all the changes, they agree that what the festival changes most is lives, from attitudes to careers and beyond.
