The trio of guests discusses booking artists while not being able to see all of them, how they avoid double-booking conflicts, and how important timing is for both the artists and the festival. They then discuss how they helped kickstart the careers of artists like Alabama Shakes and The Black Keys.

Anyone who’s been to the festival will tell you that Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival is about much more than live music. Every attendee has a story, and over the decades, many of those stories intersect. To document the phenomenon, David Bruce launched the "I am Bonnaroo" photography project, which chronicles the many stories from The Farm.

Bruce has been capturing the sights and tales of Bonnaroo for over a decade now, having started this record-keeping mission in 2011. He joins Barry and Lord Taco on this episode of The What Podcast to talk about his journey, as well as the Bonnaroo Yearbook project he kicked off last year.

Judah Akers from Judah & The Lion sat down for a conversation with the crew from The What Podcast while at Chattanooga, Tennessee’s Moon River Festival over the festival.

Akers chats about the defining moment in 2018 when they covered “Mr. Brightside” with Drew Holcomb and got a crowd of 10,000 people moving, the importance of mental health when you’re in a band, and how discussing mental struggles has come to be more acceptable than in years past. Such growing acceptance was evident even at Moon River, as Saturday headliner Caamp canceled their performance citing mental health as a primary reason they’re stepping back from touring.

Jimmy Buffett was a last-minute edition to the Bonnaroo lineup in 2009 after he reportedly reached out to organizers asking to be added. For Brad and Barry, it was a perfect example of the festival being flexible and a great opportunity for them to see an act they would not have otherwise seen. On this episode of The What Podcast, the crew honor the iconic singer-songwriter, who passed away on September 2nd at 76.

A growing number of people are choosing to experience Bonnaroo and other music festivals completely sober. So, in this week’s High Five Clip, The What Podcast crew revisits their interview with Tyrone Lindqvist from RÜFÜS DU SOL in which he tells the story of how the band was headed for a breakup before they decided to give up liquor.

“Growing up listening to the oldies and classic soul and doo-wop, it kinda falls into the music naturally,” bassist Sal Samano explains. “I don’t think it sounds exactly like the music we were and are listening to; I think it just naturally ends up in the music.”
