The Whispering Woods : True Ghost Stories & Paranormal Encounters

Hidden in the woods near Stevens Point, Wisconsin, Boy Scout Lane is a lonely, half-mile dirt road that has inspired decades of chilling folklore. Local legends tell of an entire troop of Boy Scouts who perished here—murdered by a deranged leader, lost in the forest, or burned in a freak fire. No official record supports these tales, yet visitors report phantom footsteps, glowing lanterns, and ghostly handprints on their vehicles.

Hidden behind a rusted gate off East Dexter Trail near Dansville, Michigan, lies Seven Gables Road. Folk tales tell of a woman accused of witchcraft who cursed the land before dying in a fire, declaring that “the last to cross the gate, first to die.” Years later, a family built a new house where she once lived—only for the husband to descend into madness, murdering his family, setting the house aflame, and hanging himself from what locals now call “the Hanging Tree.” Today, visitors report hearing unearthly screams, seeing figures hanging from trees, and experiencing car alarms, failed electronics, and eerie sensations of being watched—all reinforcing the legend of a still-active curse.

In the dense jungles of Kerinci Seblat National Park, Sumatra, stories have circulated for generations about the Orang Pendek—a mysterious bipedal ape said to roam the forest floor. Witnesses from tribal hunters to Western researchers describe a 4–5-foot-tall creature, covered in dark hair, walking upright and feeding on roots, grubs, and forest fruits. Unlike spirits or shapeshifters of folklore, the Orang Pendek is treated locally as a real, flesh-and-blood animal. For over a century, footprints, sightings, and even hair samples have supported the idea of an undiscovered primate species hiding in this vast, unexplored rainforest.

In the dense, pine-shrouded forests near Paulding, Michigan, a mysterious light has appeared on the horizon almost nightly since the 1960s—hovering, bobbing, and sometimes changing colour. Known locally as the Paulding Light, this ghostly phenomenon has drawn thousands to a dead-end road in the Ottawa National Forest, where visitors report seeing what looks like a spectral lantern moving through the trees.

Between 1974 and 1989, the quiet suburb of West Pittston, Pennsylvania became the epicenter of one of America’s most controversial and terrifying hauntings. The Smurl family claimed their humble duplex was under siege by a malevolent force—one that growled through walls, hurled furniture, and even assaulted family members. Their story gained national attention when famed paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren declared it a case of true demonic infestation. Priests, sceptics, psychologists, and the media all weighed in—but the family never wavered in their belief that something evil lived within their home.

Badlands National Park in South Dakota is known for its harsh terrain, ancient fossils, and striking rock formations — but it also has a darker side. For generations, visitors and locals have reported eerie experiences: unexplained lights, voices on the wind, and sightings of a ghostly woman said to cry out across the plains. Known as the “Badlands Banshee,” her wail is believed to be a warning — or a lure. Native American legends and settler stories point to the land as a place of spiritual power, mystery, and unrest. In this episode, we uncover the haunting folklore of one of America’s most desolate national parks.

In February 1983, 21‑year‑old Don Decker attended his grandfather’s funeral in Stroudsburg, PA. Within hours, he found himself at the centre of terrifying poltergeist activity: torrential indoor rain, objects hurling, lights flickering, unexplained cold spots, and mysterious bruises. The supernatural phenomena followed him home and even into the county jail, where drops of water would materialize on the ceiling and floor.
