The Whispering Woods : True Ghost Stories & Paranormal Encounters

In the summer of 1995, a quiet bungalow in Rochdale, England, became the center of one of Britain’s most baffling modern hauntings. Water dripped from dry ceilings, objects flew across rooms, phantom footsteps echoed in empty halls—and a family was driven from their home. Witnessed by council officials, clergy, and experienced investigators, the phenomena defied logic. Was it a poltergeist, the lingering grief of a troubled household, or something else entirely? This chilling case blends verified evidence with psychological mystery in one of the UK’s most compelling true haunting stories.

For this haunted episode we journey through two haunted sites. First, we enter Jeruk Purut Cemetery in Jakarta – a graveyard infamous for its headless pastor ghost said to roam the grounds with a lantern, eternally searching for his misplaced grave. Locals warn that the spirit only appears to odd-numbered groups, and many visitors have left the cemetery with scratches or inexplicable illnesses. Then, we travel to the Swahili coast to explore Fort Jesus in Mombasa, Kenya – a centuries-old Portuguese fortress layered with the horrors of colonial violence, torture chambers, and spirits said to wail through the coral stone walls. From phantom priests to haunted battlements, these tales reveal how trauma and legend linger long after death.

In early June 1994, 23-year-old Christene Skubish and her 3-year-old son, Nick, vanished near Bullion Bend on U.S. Route 50 in the Sierra Nevada. After days of searching turned up nothing, a local motorist, Deborah Hoyt, reported seeing a naked young woman lying on the roadside in the dead of night. The tip prompted a daytime search that uncovered their vehicle—Christene was dead, but Nick was miraculously alive after five days alone. The vision of a nude woman, repeatedly reported by strangers, had seemingly led rescuers to them.

In March 2015, a car carrying 25-year-old Lynn Jennifer Groesbeck and her 18-month-old daughter, Lily, plunged off a bridge into the icy Spanish Fork River in Utah. The crash went undiscovered for nearly 14 hours—until local fishermen spotted the overturned vehicle. When four police officers arrived to investigate, each would later report hearing a distinct female voice calling for help. The voice led them to the wreckage, where they found Lily still alive, suspended upside-down in her car seat just inches above the freezing water. Her mother had died on impact. The haunting nature of the rescue—the chilling voice no one can explain. Was it adrenaline, shared hallucination… or something beyond? This Whispering Woods episode explores the facts, the folklore, and the lingering mystery that surrounds the rescue of Baby Lily Groesbeck.
