How I Maintained My Weight Traveling for 51 Days
My Trip Around the Country... Planning and Prepping...
When I was 28 years old I took a summer off of teaching and drove clear across the country. This trip lasted 51 days.
I started in Los Angeles and drove through the Southwest (mainly Arizona, New Mexico and Texas to Atlanta, up the East coast Virginia Beach, DC, and Philly, across the Midwest, Chicago, Colorado, Utah and back to Los Angeles.
What was very difficult was food prepping. I wanted to make sure I didn’t lose any muscle and maintained my healthy weight at the time.
I ran into three challenges...
First, my weight training routine was very consistent, if I were to take 51 days off of lifting weights I would lose muscle.
Secondly, food prepping was going to be very difficult.
Third, NO GPS. SMART PHONES DID NOT EXIST AT THE TIME. I used a map to get around the country. If I got lost, I was on my own.
I finished the trip at the exact weight I was when I left not gaining any weight or losing any muscle.
The secret to my success at doing this was a few things. First I decided I would lift weights as a maintenance phase through this trip. I made sure to go to a gym at least 2 times per week no matter where I was.
I also ran some, walked and saw the sights of different towns along the way.
Food? How did I manage to not get caught by the many “Fast Food Nation” temptations our country is known for?
I did not drink sodas along the trip so I wasn’t addicted to the sugar cravings we all can get from sodas, candy, and sugar found in MOST foods.
When I stopped to get lunch I got a burger without fries and without a soda and I added a salad.
I drank water instead of soft drinks.
What worked for me is I had a PLAN. I had a plan for exercise and I had a plan for eating.
In conclusion I would say that maintaining or improving our fitness levels in 2023 is very “doable” if one is determined to make this a priority.
Enjoy the Show!
