Today's conversation with Jennifer was raw, authentic and touched on so many topics that I feel many of us have a hard time talking about. Jennifer shares her story around preserving through a relationship of domestic violence and how she is now an advocate for those who may not always have a voice. She is an Elizabeth Dole Fellow for Arkansas focused on caregivers and Veterans and I learned so much from my conversation with her. Today my heart is heavy. As I told my team at work yesterday, I'm not OK. As my city literally burns 3 miles south of me. As police treat peaceful protesters downtown with brutality. As my neighborhood acts like nothing is amiss. I'm not OK. And so, as I prepared to record today's episode, I decided to scrap what I was going to talk about & share what is truly #mytruth today.

Today's episode feels very vulnerable, but that's part of my privilege isn't it? I realize the episode maybe says too much & too little at the same time. I am struggling with what are the right things to say & do. If there is anything offensive or off base, please, I welcome a public correction so that I can learn.

In this episode, I share a recent moment that I experienced with the girls at the park. In that moment, I realized I am my harshest judge, especially when it comes to parenting. I talk about my rumblings with judgement over the years and I reflect on the quote from Hoda's book "I really Needed This Today" that says "Do not judge. You do not know the journey I asked her to walk through."

Today I had the chance to have an honest and open conversation with Sapphire Geer who shares her story of overcoming the cold & wilderness of the Yukon at 11 year old. Her story is one of survival, tenacity & resilience, not only in what she had to overcome as a child, but in working through her story years later in what will be her upcoming launch of her memoir, "Survive: To survive & save the family. There was no other choice." In Sapphire's own words: "The point behind it all, is our past does NOT define us. I want everyone to know that our childhood trauma can be used as a catalyst to being incredible human beings and living a incredible life if we choose to."

Today I was out for a walk planning what I was going to talk about on the podcast and a bird pooped on me. It was the perfect metaphor for what I was going to talk about which was that #MyTruthToday is that my inner voice terrifies me at times. 

Since launching this podcast, people have said I'm brave or courageous, but truthfully, I am terrified 99% of the time. I'm terrified of people not liking what I put out there, of judgement to my character, of failing those who are coming on to the platform to have honest conversations. But the reality is, if I listen to & follow my inner voice (even when I don't like what it has to say), it will always lead me on my next right step. But that leap of faith is hard when you can't always see it. 

Sometimes in life you will get shit on (literally & metaphorically) but when you get quiet and ask yourself, what is this shit trying to tell me and you ACT, that's when the true magic happens.

Ever meet someone in your life who you immediately just want to talk to again and again? Diane is one of those people. Her story, around her parenting journey, is one that so many of us can relate to, regardless if we have children or not. In this episode, we talk about the harsh judgement we put on each other and the impact that has on those around us. 

Diane has taken her journey and is on a mission to change how parents react to what traditionally has been labeled “bad behavior”. Diane believes that when a child is acting out, what they are really doing is presenting us with an opportunity for growth, both for our children and for ourselves.

In this episode, I dig into some of the thoughts, or limiting beliefs, that have held me back from doing things over the years, and more recently with this podcast. What I've learned over the last year and a half is how you talk to yourself, what you say...matters. We all have inner voices that say "should I, shouldn't I?" "But are you really qualified?" Or maybe that's just my inner voice (though I'm hoping others are with me!). In this episode, I explore my biggest limiting beliefs and how I now recognize them & move past them. Because as my favorite Morning Mama meditation says...if you believe you can, you will.

Think about that quote. Really think about it. It makes me tear up because I think this is what so many of us strive for, but sometimes, it's so hard to do. I share this quote because today's episode is a conversation I had with Daniela Giangiorgi who graciously shares her "lemons, so we can make lemonade." Daniela and I talk about her divorce, her journey with cancer, but the underlying theme throughout our conversation is that you cannot be truly yourself, if you are not honoring yourself. And you are not able to honor yourself (fully) if you are constantly putting others first. There were so many points that Daniela made that stuck me deeply...like that mirror you didn't want in your face...but it's so important to have those conversations because then you're aware of what needs to be looked at.

Today I talk about how I've been having a series of bad days, and even though I knew why I was having them, I still struggled to get myself out of the rut. But today I took control and began to (slowly!) shift my mindset (hey, I was able to launch this episode, right?!?). But it got me thinking, about how many of us are probably having not so great moments/days/weeks right now given the global pandemic and how we can think about supporting one another.
