A diagnosis of diabetes isn't just a diagnosis of diabetes. It is important to know the difference between type 1 and type 2 diabetes. They are two distinct conditions that require different approaches to management and treatment. And while blood sugar and insulin are key players in both, knowing the difference between the two types of diabetes can help people understand their own risk factors and take steps to prevent or manage the condition.
To help us navigate these differences, we invited Melissa Slemp to the show. Melissa is known as the Blood Sugar Boss and is the founder of Abundant Health with Melissa. She is a health coach and has been living with type 1 diabetes for 40 years. She noticed changes in her hormones and insulin needs once she hit menopause and set out to make it her mission to help women manage their own diabetes.
Procrastination around dieting is a common issue that many people face. Whether it's putting off meal planning or postponing starting a new diet, the temptation to delay can be overwhelming. However, this behavior can be detrimental to achieving any of our weight loss goals. It's important to recognize the underlying reasons for this and take steps to overcome it.
To talk about this, we invited Sonia Jhas to the show. Sonia is the author of I'll Start Again Tomorrow (And Other Lies I've Told Myself) and a TEDxspeaker. She shares how she gave up her skyrocketing corporate career and pursued her deep passion for wellness and followed her driving desire to help others.
Toxins can play a significant role in weight gain and weight loss. Our bodies are bombarded by toxins from a variety of sources, including food, the air we breathe, and the products we use. These toxins can accumulate in our bodies over time and can disrupt our hormonal balance, metabolism, and immune system, which can lead to weight gain. However, by reducing our exposure to toxins and supporting our body's natural detoxification processes, we can improve our overall health and promote weight loss.
To show us some simple and practical lifestyle changes, we invited Dr. Wendie Trubow back to the show. Dr. Wendie is the co-author of Dirty Girl: Ditch the Toxins, Look Great, and Feel Freaking Amazing. She joins the show to share how she overcame her own struggles with mold and metal toxicity, Celiac disease, and her other health issues all brought on by toxin overload.
In the world we live in that's dominated by diet culture, it often feels like we can't operate without some form of restriction when it comes to what we eat. So when the concept of intuitive eating comes up, many of us just don't feel comfortable trusting our natural instincts and listen to the hints our body suggests. Intuitive eating also doesn't mean that we can eat whatever, whenever and however much we want mindlessly.
To help us navigate this artform, we invited Kim Hynes to the show. Kim is a health coach who specializes in coaching busy women over 40 who desire to give themselves permission to eat, lose weight intuitively, and reduce stress. She accomplishes this by helping her clients identify natural hunger and fullness signals, as well as their own preferences and cravings while ditching restrictive dieting rules.
We all are familiar with prescription drugs and supplements. However, Medical Foods are a unique category of FDA regulated products that meet the distinctive nutritional requirements or metabolic deficiencies of a particular disease state. Medical Foods have shown to support life or maintain homeostasis by adjusting the nutritional needs of the particular medical condition, obesity being one of the conditions that Medical Foods can address.
To dive into this new topic and how it assists in weight loss, we invited Dr. Lawrence May to the show. Dr. May earned his M.D. from Harvard Medical School and has practiced primary care internal medicine integrating nutrition and lifestyle into the care of patients. Dr. May previously served as Chairman of the Medical Advisory Board and Executive Vice President for Medical and Scientific affairs at Herbalife International.
Sometimes what we see in the mirror isn't a true reflection of what's going on. Our perception of our bodies can be very deceptive. If we struggle with a poor body image, we can experience a cascade of issues that can lead to eating disorders, exercise addiction, and other destructive behaviors that are unhealthy.
We invited Kelly Gifford to the show to discuss this issue. Kelly joins the show to share her tips on how to heal a poor body image and how to cultivate real confidence. She is the owner of Kelevate, a podcast host, and is a personal fitness trainer and nutritionist. She dives into how her body image struggles were the result of a ton of conditioning, internalized fat-phobia, diet culture and the suppression of a lifetime of pain, shame and insecurity.
Wouldn't it be nice to finally have that magic pill in the weight loss world? We can't say we have discovered it in Omega-3's yet, but the overall health benefits that it possesses are so vast that there is a huge argument to get it in your supplementation routine. And as our philosophy holds strong that weight loss is a byproduct of health, Omega-3 fatty acids are essential to a healthy weight especially since Omega-3's reduce inflammation and improves insulin sensitivity.
To break down the benefits of Omega-3 fatty acids, we invited Dr. WIlliam Harris to the show. Dr. Harris is an internationally recognized expert on omega-3 fatty acids and obtained his Ph.D. in Human Nutrition from the University of Minnesota and did post-doctoral fellowships in Clinical Nutrition and Lipid Metabolism at the Oregon Health Sciences University. Dr. Harris is a Professor in the Department of Medicine in the Sanford School of Medicine at the University of South Dakota and the President and CEO of OmegaQuant.
A plant based diet is another tool worth looking into if you are trying to shed pounds while embracing a healthy and ethical lifestyle. But, just like any other diet, there's a proper way to go about embarking on a plant based journey besides just cutting out the meat. There is a methodology to this approach and a science behind why plant based diets are getting weight loss results.
To dive into the science behind the relationship between veganism and weight loss, we invited Nafsika Antypas to the show. Nafsika Antypas is the writer, host, and executive producer of the television series, Plant-Based by Nafsika, as well as the owner of international vegan food brand, Nafsika's Garden. She joins the show to share her journey how she turned to veganism and her mission to make the transition easy while not breaking the bank.
One of the most common complaints that poeple make on their weight loss journey is that there's just too much noise when it comes to weight loss advice. By noise we mean all the talk of the various fad diets and trends that seem to always contradict one another. It is easily understandable how a person can easily be frustrated by this and get a feeling of hopelessness and quit before they start. So what if we had a blueprint that helps ditch the fad diets and helps to lose weight sustainably without any more quick fixes?
Andres Ayesta has that exact blueprint. Andres is a Registered Dietitian, CSSD, Weight Loss Expert for women, the host of The Nutrition Blueprint Podcast, and founder of Planos Nutrition. He helps highly driven women, female entrepreneurs, and executives by providing personalized, evidence-based nutrition blueprints to become the most confident version of themselves.
