Jesus said all people will know we are his disciples if we love one another (John 13:35). In what way was this a “new” commandment (John 13:34)? And how does this look practically in everyday life? Dan and Robert explore this and more on this episode of Today With Jesus.
Speaking with Jews who believed on Him, Jesus said a test of true discipleship is whether someone abides in His word (John 8:31). Dan and Robert dive into this text to explore the concept and, therefore, to learn how we can be better disciples of Jesus.
When Jesus stopped to speak to the great crowds that accompanied him, he spoke to them about what it takes to be a true disciple of his. Having already noted two traits that are necessary to be a disciple of Jesus, Dan and Robert now turn to the end of Luke 14, where Jesus says that his followers must be loyal to him above all else.
The cross was obviously a focal point of Jesus’s ministry. In fact, Luke records several times when Jesus alluded to the cross in the presence of his disciples. In Luke 14:27, Jesus even goes so far as to say that one does not have what it takes if he or she is not willing to bear a cross of their own.
In Luke 14, Jesus uses the term “disciple” three times, offering with that term a conditional statement. The Lord says that unless one does certain things, that individual cannot be his disciple. That phrasing does not communicate that one is not permitted to be his disciple, but rather that he or she does not have what it takes to be a disciple of Jesus. So what does it take to be a disciple of Jesus? The first thing addressed in Luke 14:26 is LOVE. Do you love Jesus more than anyone else?
On our last episode, Dan and Robert discussed Jesus’ example of service and the emphasis he places upon his disciples serving others. What motivated the serving spirit of Jesus? Hebrews 12:1-2 may give us a clue.
Jesus uses the term “disciple” in Matthew 10:42 to call us to his own example of service. Am I willing to live like Jesus?
On our last episode we learned that a disciple, according to Jesus, is someone who LOOKS like him (Matthew 10:25). Let’s explore that deeper by focusing Jesus in his darkest hour, at Calvary, and making seven broad applications from the things Jesus said while he was on the cross.
Dan and Robert continue their study of Jesus’ use of the title “disciple,” noting the times when Jesus himself gave us a description of what it means to follow him. In addition to the fact that Jesus’ disciples must LISTEN to him (see season 8, episode 2 and episode 3), we learn that Jesus’ disciples must also LOOK like Jesus. Let’s dive into Matthew 10:25 and focus on when Jesus said, “It is enough for the disciple to be like his teacher.”
On this special episode of Today With Jesus, recorded at The Light Network’s Conference in Henderson, TN, Dan and Robert share one passage each that grew their love for Jesus.
