We're playing TopMedTalk's Top Ten during the month of October, in no particular order. It's an opportunity for new and established listeners to catch up with the most popular podcasts over the past year.
Today's piece is called "Treating Patients Properly" and was recorded at EBPOM USA, Atlanta.
Treating patients as people rather than 'jobs to be done' and 'boxes to be ticked' is the focus of this piece. What can Doctors do better when it comes to treating patients? Find out what happened when a perioperative care doctor became a patient. A fascinating conversation, streamed live from Atlanta Georgia during the second day of TopMedTalk's coverage of "EBPOM-USA Masters Course, A Perioperative Care Practicum".
Hosted by Desiree Chappell and Monty Mythen. Featuring Dr Paul Wischmeyer, Professor of Anaesthesiology and Surgery at Duke Anesthesiology and TopMedTalk's Henry Howe, a medical student at Bristol University.

We're playing TopMedTalk's top ten during the month of October, in no particular order. It's an opportunity for new and established listeners to catch up with the most popular podcasts of the past year.
This piece was originally presented during the Third Annual Quality Improvement Leadership Forum, 2018, at the Union League Club in Philidelphia.
The trial looked at the effect of goal-directed haemodynamic therapy on postoperative complications in low–moderate risk surgical patients: a multicentre randomised controlled trial (FEDORA trial).
Randomised Controlled Multicentre trial; n=420; GDHT vs Control
Conclusions:
"Oesophageal Doppler monitor-guided GDHT reduced postoperative complications and hospital length of stay in low–moderate risk patients undergoing intermediate risk surgery, with no difference in mortality at 180 days."

How do hospitals and institutions best use their assets in a world of big data where we can deploy predictive analytics and the new metrics they make available to us? Currently we tend to use the clumsy metrics of averages when there now exists the possibility to use more high fidelity predictive patterns adapted to the unique flow of users and situations. Learn how constraint based optimisation and forecasting has allowed for an exponential rise in the effectiveness of our already existing resources.
Desiree Chappell and her guests Sanjeev Agrawal, President & CMO at LeanTaaS, ex Google, Aloqa and Collegefeed and Mike Grocott, Anaesthesia and Critical Care Medicine, University of Southampton.
