"Babies are still being born" Still! Revisiting this conversation from early in the pandemic, we discuss obstetrics during COVID.
This piece looks at the area of obstetrics in the midst of an unprecedented global crisis regarding the COVID 19 outbreak. How can the delicate balance between reducing infections and social distancing be interwoven with the needs of modern childbirth.
Should we be concerned that some patients may shun hospital assisted births for fear of contagion? How has the data from China, much of which focused upon cesarean section births, been useful to us in the West? Why do the data have that angle?
Are there benefits to the new ways in which we have found to communicate during this global crisis which can be moved into a new life with COVID present but in a more manageable form?
Presented by Desiree Chappell and Monty Mythen with Sam Bampoe, University College London Hospital, Consultant Anesthetist, Director, Trainees with an Interest in Perioperative Medicine (TRIPOM), Nuala Lucas, Consultant Anesthetist at Northwick Park Hospital, Executive Committee Member for the Obstetric Anesthetists' association and Pat O'Brien, Consultant Obstetrician at University College London Hospital, Vice President of Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

What are the latest developments in quality improvement programs that help operative teams around the world take what they do to the next level? When does the surgical journey begin? How has a focus upon patients prior to surgery improved outcomes? What are "the five phases of care"? How has data collection and management helped us to continually improve a patient's surgical journey?
This piece is a talk which was given during the 8th Australian and New Zealand Symposium of Perioperative Medicine Special Interest Group: "Updates in Perioperative Medicine 360" which took place between November 7th-9th 2019
Presented by Clifford Ko, Professor of Surgery at UCLA, Director of the Division of Research and Optimal Patient Care at the American College of Surgeons.
This piece, originally streamed live on www.topmedtalk.com features a conversation about the implementation of enhanced recovery protocols and the results practitioners report. The discussion starts with the observation that just implementing the ERAS intraoperative protocols drove outstanding outcomes in practice. The wider discussion focuses on the importance of putting into practice a bigger plan.
Presented by Desiree Chappell with her guests Raul Castillo, Anesthesia Medical Director at the University of Missouri Hospital, Jennifer Clark, Staff Nurse Anesthetist at the University of Missouri Hospital Department of Anesthesiology, and Kay Smith, pain nurse coordinator University of Missouri Hospital.
"I'm also a United States Air Force Officer and reservist and on April 4th was activated and given approximately 48hrs to deploy on a C-5 Galaxy Military Aircraft to the epicenter, New York City and I've been here for approximately, it's been almost a month now"
This piece follows on from a previous exclusive conversation regarding the US military deployment to New York; here we get more detail and spend time thinking about how Enhanced Recovery must be an essential part of any "new normal".

Presented by Desiree Chappell with Captain Joel Sherwood United States Air Force Reserves and Medical Science Liaison, National Director, Government Affairs, Pacira Pharmaceuticals.
This piece focuses upon the increasing development of artificial intelligence and automation within the medical profession. Can automated monitoring actually allow practitioners to live more "in the moment" while in the operating theater? How do we use algorithms to avoid information overload?

This piece was originally streamed from 'The Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists' (SCA) annual conference, 2019.
Presented by Desiree Chappell and Monty Mythen with Sol Aronson, Tenured Professor, Duke University and Executive Vice Chairman in the Department of Anesthesiology, and their guest Tjorvi Perry, Assistant Professor, Department of Anesthesiology, University Minnesota.
This piece takes a look at the frontline fight against COVID 19 at Penn Medicine Princeton Medical Center in New Jersey, USA. Details of airway, ventilation and hemodynamic management are discussed with the director of Critical care and Anesthesiology. Resource management is a clear front runner as the virus creates a public health emergency for medics to try to battle. Additional beds and treatment facilities are being prepared, what other innovations are being brought to the fore.
Presented by Desiree Chappell with Monty Mythen and their guests Michael Scott, M.B., Ch.B. Professor of Anesthesiology at the University of Pennsylvania, Asmeet Bajaj, MD, Chief of Critical Care and Bridget Ruscito, MD Chair of the Dept of Anesthesiology at the Penn Medicine Princeton Medical Center and Jesse James Kiefer, MD, Anesthesiologist Assistant Professor of Clinical Anesthesiology and Critical Care at the University of Pennsylvania.

"46% pretty much means every other patient who was getting IV opioids was having some sort of a respiratory depression event"
After a quick round up of COVID news in the contributor's respective areas this piece gets involved in a much needed discussion about the "PRediction of Opioid-induced Respiratory Depression In Patients Monitored by capnoGraphY (PRODIGY)" trial.

Armed with a background in biomedical engineering, doubled with an EMBA in Finance, our guest has spent the past 20 years within the medical device industry. In 2010 he was instrumental in setting up MDoloris Medical Systems, with the mission to provide technologies that allow clinicians a reliable, continuous and non-invasive evaluation of autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity. Based on 23 years of academic research, performed by a French research lab, the technology allows anaesthetists and intensivists to effectively tailor analgesia; more so for patients who are unable to communicate.
The technology is available for adults, paediatrics, neonates as well as animals (specifically horses, cats and dogs), in both standalone and more recently modular format.
Presented by Desiree Chappell and Monty Mythen with their guest Fabian Pagniez, CEO and founder of MDoloris Medical Systems.
