Doug Lyons is a great young Broadway playwright as well as an actor, writer, director, and composer. He loves creating stories that will illuminate the lives of Black queer people and I love talking to him about Broadway, acting, writing, and how he wants to tell great stories about gay people.

Touré Show Ep - 159: I Save People
Original Air Date: July 22, 2020
Iyanla Vanzant is one of the most interesting guests I’ve ever had. In this talk she deeply analyzes the world, herself, me, everything. She’s a fountain of wisdom. I am usually skeptical of spiritual guru types but this woman is doing the work of saving people. And this conversation shows me how deeply she thinks and cares about people. It was an honor to get to know her. This is a throwback to our interview from 2020.

Zakiya Dalila Harris is the best-selling novelist who wrote The Other Black Girl, a book that took the publishing industry by storm. I love talking to writers about writing and their process and the way to make a book explode.

Original Title: Touré Show Ep 171: I'm A Writer
Isabel Wilkerson is one of the great writers of her generation. The author of The Warmth Of Other Suns and Caste is creating narrative non-fiction that explains Black America with a depth and precision rarely seen. I love her research, I love her way of explaining things, and I love her writing style so we’re throwing back to one of my favorite eps ever. It’s a visit with a genius.

Michael Eric Dyson is a brilliant public intellectual and a great friend. I love talking with him because he’s genius and because he loves Blackness so deeply. Here we dive into some of the messages in his new book Entertaining Race where he talks about the history of Black Americans being entertainers on every level. We are performative on a celebrity level from music to screen to sports, but we are also amazingly and beautifully performative on every level. Regular Black folks talk and walk and greet each other in ways that are expressive and performative and beautiful. We talk through all of that.

Tananarive Due understands horror. She’s written it, she’s studied it, she teaches about it at UCLA in a class that has Jordan Peele come by to explain his perspective. There’s something unique about Black horror films like Get Out or Candyman—they’re not usually just a madman going around killing. There’s usually some political angle that relates to the challenge of being Black in America. Tananarive talks about this and much more about the art and science of Black horror films including the work of Jordan Peele.
