Our discovery of Lakeview Hip Camp in Beachmere is exactly why we love exploring close to home. Just 45 minutes from Brisbane's CBD, this 50-acre property offers lakefront camping with direct water access, provided kayaks and paddleboards, and thoughtful amenities including a playground, games area, and campfire pits. Before we sold up our life on the Gold Coast, we had never even owned a tent. Fast forward 180,000km, three different vans, two vehicles, and a few “well, that was a bad idea” purchasing decisions—we’ve learned a thing or two.

From the highs of remote sunsets and campfire cook-ups to the lows of vehicle rollovers, split heads, broken ankles, ribs, and the occasional tyre blowout, we’ve lived to tell the tale. As the saying goes, “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger” … or at least a whole lot wiser!

The first couple of years we cruised the blacktop, but for the last three years, we’ve gone full send into the off-road life. Cape York, Oodnadatta, Meerenie Loop, Plenty Highway—if it’s remote and rugged, chances are we’ve driven it. In fact, our first year with our ZONE RV and Toyota Landcruiser 79 was spent entirely off-grid—unplugged, self-sufficient, and loving it!

This week we’re continuing our Road to Riches road trip, heading east to the Sapphire Gemfields of Central Queensland.

We camp overnight in a little forgotten Outback town, famous for its incredible petrified wood forests, before pushing on to Rubyvale in the heart of the Sapphire Gemfields. 

We enjoy a great couple of days hunting for gemstones, meeting the locals and exploring the region, camping up at the Gem Seekers Caravan Park right in town. We stop in to the Rubyvale Gem Gallery to catch up with our good friends, the Brown family, and enjoy a meal or two at the Rubyvale Pub.

 If you love a good treasure hunt, you’ll love a visit to this quirky region of Central Australia!
