True Crime Guys

This week, we're sharing a special preview of the new season of Pushkin's show Lost Hills: Dead in the Water. Lost Hills investigates the dark side of Malibu, California. Beneath a seductive facade, this city of billionaires, celebrities, and surf bums is hiding something menacing.

Season 2 takes place in the early ‘80s, as Malibu was changing from a low-profile beach town into a celebrity haven, full of new money and hard drugs. When a woman and her son mysteriously drowned, her husband was arrested for their murders—and ultimately convicted. But to this day, many people—including the victim's family—claim he’s innocent.

There's something scarier about being on the same island as a serial killer.. In the mid 80’s a killer terrorized the island of Honolulu, leaving residents and law enforcement terrified and confused, until a man interjected himself into the investigation, a man we believe to be the Honolulu Strangler.

In this episode we discuss the happenings of a mysterious man by the name of Neal Falls, who is suspected to be involved in murders and missing persons cases across the country. Several of those cases involve (You guessed it!) Las Vegas, in which he resided for 8 years while working at the Hoover Dam. We originally released this episode under a different podcast back in January of 2017, before we transitioned to True Crime Guys...enjoy this one from the TCG Vault!

This week we’re talking about the complex serial killer, Gary Evans, who happened to work out with The Son of Sam who gave him the fitting nickname, "The Tricep King".

A girl named Joanne dated Gary on and off for over 8 years.. She gives some insight into his personality..

"He was like a 10 year old, subsisting on gallons of milk, boxes of cocoa puffs and chocolate chip cookies.."5'6" built like a tank. He was also known to skateboard and jump on the trampoline with his nephew. He was known to them as quiet, gentle and caring.. He liked to draw mountains, write poems about freedom, the stars, and love…I mean…if the guy didn’t kill five people we’d swipe right.

Hope College Film instructor David Schock came across Janet's story in the spring of 2003 while interviewing a detective who was retiring from the Holland police force. Schock asked if there was one case that still haunted the cop. Pointing to a photo of Janet that had been hanging on a bulletin board since 1979, the detective replied, "That Chandler case." Professor Schock thought the 24 year old mystery of the murdered former Hope student would be a good project for his class. "I don't want you to think that we are going to solve this murder," Schock told his students.  Instead by making a documentary about the case, they should aim to revive Janet's memory…that, they did, and by doing that, they exposed a dark truth no one saw coming.
