True Crime Obsessed

Martin Shkreli IS THE FREAKING WORST! The 38-year-old financial entrepreneur and pharmaceutical tycoon from Brooklyn was dubbed "the most hated man in America"  in 2015 for price gouging the prescription drug Daraprim by 5500% overnight depriving AIDS patients, people with cancer, and pregnant people of the life-saving medication. That same year, Shkreli purchased the Wu-Tang Clan's single copy of "Once Upon a Time in Shaolin" for 2 million dollars, AND THEN TALKED TRASH ABOUT WU -TANG EVERY CHANCE HE GOT. Prepare to get fired up, Fam!

Long before the hit podcast Serial spurred the world into podcast-listening, Rabia Chaudry was on a mission. The 1999 murder of a high school student named Hae Min Lee left a community grieving and a family friend of Rabia’s, 17-year-old Adnan Syed, in the crosshairs. He was sentenced to life in prison, where he still is to this day. In this episode, we’ll trace Rabia’s decades-long fight to free Adnan, find Hae’s killer and champion the truths of so many others along the way.

Connie Walker is a journalist on a mission to tell the stories of missing & murdered indigenous women in Canada. So, when a band of fellow Cree siblings reached out to her asking if she’d find out what happened to their long-lost sister, Connie went searching. And the resulting journey of producing the podcast Missing & Murdered: Finding Cleo would prove to be about so much more than one family’s fate.

On a cold day in 1983, a plumber was called to an apartment building in the Cranley Gardens neighborhood of North London. The building drains were clogged. And when he climbed down into plumbing "man hole" he saw what was causing the blockage: human flesh and bone. What followed was essentially an elaborate confession by one of the building's tenants: Dennis Nilsen who explained to the police that he had murdered and dismembered at least 12 men and boys and disposed of them both UNDER HIS FLOORBOARDS AND DOWN THE DRAINS. How is it possible that at least 12 people could vanish and be murdered and nobody noticed?

Update Description

This show has a bone to pick true crime podcasts. Where are all the women’s perspectives? The detectives, the witnesses, the movers and shakers of any case are not always dudes. So let’s widen our framework, shall we? On Let The Women Do The Work, join host Gillian Pensavalle as she follows the stories of ten dynamic, inspiring, badass women in true crime, one episode at a time.

Let The Women Do The Work is a 10-part series premiering weekly in the True Crime Obsessed feed starting April 28th, 2022.

LET'S OBJECTIFY SOME MEN FOR A CHANGE! The Chippendale all-male review (read STRIP SHOW) was the hottest shows in Los Angeles in the early 1980s. And it was all fun and games UNTILL THE MURDERS STARTED HAPPENING. First a Playboy playmate who frequented the club where the men stripped is killed. And then someone much closer to the show is murdered in his office in the middle of the day. THIS IS WHY WE CAN'T HAVE NICE THINGS JUST LET THE NAKED MEN DANNNNNNNNNNCE.

Three young women vanish months apart from each other. Massive searches ensue for each. Days or weeks later, each one is found dead in the location they were last seen. In each case, their deaths are ruled hypothermia even though there's evidence of foul play. How could they have been missed by searchers? Were they abducted, murdered, and then brought back to the place they vanished? Loni Coombs investigates.
