In this conversation, painter Jake Fern invites Matthew Glamorre, an artist, videographer, and outspoken critic of the LGBTQ movement, to his home for the first of three chats recorded while Jake paints his portrait. Matthew describes himself as an “outcast amongst outcasts” and looks back on a childhood that swung from idyllic to chaotic: growing up in Hay-on-Wye among his father’s rock-and-roll friends, a farmhouse life in the Black Mountains spent close to the seasons, and a family fortune that vanished almost overnight in the 1970s oil crisis.

He talks candidly about growing up looking like a girl, being called “gay” as a schoolboy insult, and why he has never accepted that word for himself, preferring to call himself a “stately English homo.” He explains why he sees the rainbow identity as something that was quickly commercialised after the AIDS years, and why mediocrity and conformity are things he has always recoiled from, along with his reputation as a prude on the 1980s London club scene.

Underneath it all is a more spiritual story: the pull between the old ways of hedgerow, harvest and nature and the grandeur of high Anglicanism at Hereford Cathedral School, leaving home at 13 for London nightlife, and a sense of duty, as an elder now, to pass on a connection to the land that he feels others have been denied.

Publicly owned motorways are being leased from the state and being converted into privately operated, highly expensive routes. Failure to pay the toll often leads to the seizing of vehicles, and this has happened to hundreds of thousands of Texans.

Terri also describes manipulative technologies like automotive ‘kill’ switches in vehicles as well as the dangers of driverless trucks and unmanned taxis currently causing havoc on US roads.

China has transformed dramatically since the the People’s Republic was founded in 1949. Carl Zha joins Jamarl Thomas to examine what that transformation means for America and the wider world.

Carl and Jamarl begin with China’s National Day and the extraordinary changes in Chinese living standards, literacy, healthcare and technological capacity over the past several decades. They discuss China’s reduction of poverty and the expansion of its STEM workforce, while they also examine how China’s economic rise has generated concern in Washington.

The conversation turns to America’s changing economic and political model. Carl argues that the Cold War once forced U.S. elites to share more of their economic gains with working Americans, but the collapse of the Soviet Union removed much of that pressure. They debate whether America’s current confrontation with China is really ideological — or is it fundamentally a struggle over global power and U.S. supremacy.

The discussion takes another turn. There is controversy that surrounds North Korean prisoners who were captured in Russia and transferred to South Korea. Carl explains the Cold War history where prisoners of war were used for political and intelligence purposes, and then examines the dispute between Seoul and Kyiv.

Carl and Jamarl also discuss Trump, Iran, Russia and the global oil market, including the so-called “shadow fleet” that transports sanctioned Russian and Iranian oil. They examine how attempts to restrict those flows could send global oil prices sharply higher, particularly if China and India are forced to compete for alternative supplies.

Finally, the conversation moves to Japan’s military buildup, Taiwan and the UN Charter. Carl explains the continued dispute over Japan’s postwar military restrictions, Article 9, the historical legacy of World War II, and why Beijing views Japanese military expansion—particularly in connection with a potential Taiwan conflict—as a major security issue.
