Unapologetic Tawk

We are back after a little break last week. We start by discussing yet another murder of a Black woman, Sonya Massey, by a cop in the United States of America. Relly and Dimez discuss their respective actions that they organized in response to the murder, and the cyclical nature of this trauma. We also catch up on everything we missed in the Presidential race including Kamala Harris's presidential run and all the pandering that comes with that. We react to Trump's meltdown at the NABJ conference where he continued his history of racism by questioning Kamala Harris's Blackness.

We have comrade and returning guest Bri Laboss back in the cut this week to talk everything from the continuing conversation over Joe Biden’s ability to be a presidential candidate to our reactions to Kendrick dropping the “Not Like Us” music video and the recent list of terrible decisions from the Supreme Court. Using the weekend of White Parties to delve into a discussion over navigating the market as a Black creative, and the insidious nature of the entertainment industry being tied to white wealth. We wrap up by recapping our experience outside over the last week with Dimez leading the Queer Liberation March, and Relly’s anti-Fourth of July March.

We spend most of this week breaking down the sick joke that was the Presidential debate last week, and wondering how we got to the point where two geriatric villains are auditioning to be the most powerful men in the world. We touch on their general sundowning, their responses on Israel-Palestine questions, and more.

Then, we talk about NYPD Commissioner Eddie Caban being exposed for systematizing police abuse coverups through administrative tactics. This leads to a larger discussion on the abuse of authority rampant in the upper ranks of the NYPD and city government.

We end by capping off Pride Month and discussing the familiar annual pinkwashing, and the difference between the Queer Liberation March and the Corporate Pride Parade.

We start episode 40 off with Juneteenth, watching some videos of Kathy Hochul speaking to the holiday and breaking down why once again she is full of sh!t. We also discuss Juneteenth in the context of Eric Adams, just days after Adams shut down The Black Opts annual Juneteenth event in the Bronx with less than 24hrs notice!

To give us more context on what happened and what’s next, Hawk and Chivona Newsome from Tyhe Black Opts join the episode! They tell us the wholeeeee scoop. We also hear from Mario Benabe from Black Opts, especially about the first public Montessori school in the Bronx.

After we finish discussing everything with Hawk Chivona and Mario, they leave the call and we return to a few more topics - Bishop Whitehead, Ken & Friends, upcoming events and actions in NYC.

As always, we didn’t get to everything we wanted to because there is just so much to say! So tune in next week to catch us again!

This week’s episode is an exciting one! We are thrilled to have Winter on the podcast! Winter is an activist and comedian and you know that is right in the Unapologetic Tawk wheelhouse!

We talk about Winter’s life, spending time living in Yemen, comedy career, introduction to activism, and so much more. Transitioning into Winter’s activism for Palestine, we touch on encountering Racism and Zionism in these spaces.

We can’t talk about modern activism without talking about social media, celebrities, and celebrity activism, so our talk transitions through each of these lenses. This is a packed episode and we still have so much to talk about with Winter, so expect to see Winter back again soon!!!

This week we welcome our Comrade Cesar on the show for a wide ranging conversation. Cesar talks about his personal journey in discovering his queerness and how it intersects with his Blackness. He then tells his story on how he has been unfairly targeted by SUNY Purchase for his act of peaceful protest in support of the people of Palestine on campus.

The crew then discusses some of the week’s news events including the various Pro-Palestinian protests at graduation ceremonies across the country, the reaction to the release of security video of Diddy assaulting Cassie, and much more! Tune in and sound off in the comments.

This week we are incredibly excited to bring you the We The People episode! (part one of many)

We have We The People cofounder Shea as a guest as well as our lovely comrade and WTP core member and Miss Patreon herself, Lauren!

We dive into the history of We The People, what got each member started, and what keeps them going!

After this wonderful and heartfelt dive into We The People, we shift into a slightly darker tone.

On May 11th, two organizers at We The People’s weekly Harlem distro were arrested. The police attempted to disrupt the distribution but it kept going anyways! 7 more arrests were made at jail support. Rosie joins this discussion as the team breaks down the escalating series of events driven by NYPD ego.

By the time this episode airs, We The People has since successfully completed Harlem distro this past Saturday!

We have something a little bit different for y’all this week! Rudy was on a panel in March as part of a book tour for Nathan Schneider’s Governable Spaces: Democratic Design for Online Life, where he discussed his community bank account project, Paper Tree, among a host of other NYC-based projects and how it factors into a larger discussion about organizing in online spaces. Really enlightening discussion about the possibilities available to us in such a hierarchical, hostile structure as the internet.

So much to cover this episode, with historic student protests and historic police repression in response. We discuss the raids at Columbia and CCNY in New York against the Gaza Solidarity Encampments, the relationship between previous campus protests and current, and review some of the bodycam and press conference footage from those nights. It’s gripping and dismaying.

We visit the story of Jeffrey Maddrey and his NYPD corruption scandal. We review the footage of Maddrey letting a retired cop walk out of the station after voiding his arrest.

Relly and Dimez recount two weeks of protesting the dirty 67th precinct, including Relly’s bogus arrest. Shame on the 67th!

Dimez recounts the recent SWAR events including the first open community event of the year and new merch! They also bring the hosts into a discussion of movement sustainability to close the episode!

An all-around must watch episode!
