In this episode we have guests Brian Cummings and Shakeem Hinds in the studio with Relly! Rolling in on good energy, we start off with an introduction to our guests, who they are and what they do.

Then we get into the hot topic - NYPD harassing Brian and Shakeem last week while they were chilling out front of their nephews house in a nice car. The officers were known to them having harassed them before, and the incident ended in arrests.

We dissect the video of the incident with our guests telling their side of the story, and then topic gets more nuanced: patterns of NYPD harassment, criminalization of Black success, and how this all relates to bigger themes in our everyday lives.

This is just the start for Brian and Shakeem as they spread their story and fight for accountability from the NYPD.

This week we are in the studio with Carl Ellis Grant, an actor, comedian, former NASA engineer, and much more. We start off interviewing Carl about his experience at NASA, his experiences in standup comedy and curating the Brooklyn Dreams comedy, his acting career, and the tech world. We then dive into the time the Unapologetic Tawk team first met Carl last year.

Carl was assaulted by NYPD officer Emile Pratt, who also assaulted a 13 yr old on camera weeks later. Relly, Dimez and the protest community went out to hold the transit precinct accountable.

Carl and the team recount the events, and delve into Carl’s relationship to the police and his family, using standup comedy to find healing, and holding the police accountable.

Midway through the topic the team makes an exciting discovery live - its Breaking News!

This discussion leads naturally to the recent protest by Relly and team against dirty NYPD Captain Adan Munoz of the 79th precinct in Bedstuy.

We got a packed episode this week! We started recording only about an hour after the earthquake hit NYC on Friday, so you know we had to dig into that. Then Dimez fills us in on Stonewall Was A Riot’s action taking a visit to the residence of the KKKaren, Christine Thierry, to demand further accountability for her racist attack.

We then get into the viral dismantling of Eric Adams on the Breakfast Club last week, shout out to Olay. We give our own take on a few of the topics brought up during that interview– including the murder of Win Rosario, a 19-year-old shot by the NYPD while going through a mental health crisis, and the shooting death of a NYPD officer and subsequent drama of Kathy Hochul getting turned away at his funeral. We also use it as an opportunity to talk about more of Eric Adams corrupt ties, and discuss the further updates on the Diddy case.

We touch on the recent occupation of Zuccotti Park in Manhattan to demand actions in solidarity with the people of Gaza, and catch up on the brutal missile attack by the IOF on World Central Kitchen Aid workers.

We round out the episode with discussion of the NYPD’s announcement that it will begin using AI scanners to try to detect weapons in the subway, including looking at the AI technology’s faulty history. And then we react to and discuss a recent clip of an NYPD Captain (named Adan Munoz from the 79th Precinct) assaulting a Black man in Bed-Stuy, including gun butting him, over tinted windows. We end on a lighter note by discussing the growing beef between Kendrick and J. Cole, react to their respective verses, and lament how the hip hop landscape has changed along with the beefs.

We talk about Bluestockings’ important role in providing a safe community space for a variety of individuals and groups, and Al educates us on the ins and outs of harm reduction– how to spot an overdose, the origins of fentanyl and other new drugs on the scene, and larger structural critiques of drug policy. We also discuss their sex work and what it was like opening up to people about that work.

We finish the episode discussing a much more somber subject– the murder of Samyia Spain, a 19-year-old girl, who was stabbed by a man for rejecting his sexual advances. This leads to a larger discussion on the violence of masculinity.

Our recording studio was graced by the presence of none other than Dianne Morales! As our guest for episode 27, Dianne anchored a conversation about principles, histories and stories, and revolution. 

Dianne touches upon her political and personal wisdom in the midst of discussing her life and background, her run for mayor of NYC in 2021, and the pathways she continues to carve towards liberation. Especially in Puerto Rico! 

Dianne describes having a drive for seeing better for her community since she was a child and we hear about how that shaped the person she is today, how her activism shaped her political career.

We discuss the long rifle carrying elephants in the subway - Kathy Hochul deploying 750 national guard and Eric Adams competing by deploying even more NYPD. We’re not sure what they’re going to do besides exactly what the existing officers already do: nothing but violate rights and safety of New Yorkers.

Finally, we break down recent violence committed by members of the protest community, a group supposedly committed to protestor safety. We touch on why and how community response to this videotaped attack has been lacking.

This discussion leads into our interview with Chillian Thomas, activist and comedian. Chillian dropped a lot of truth bombs this episode that's all we can say. We review the groups history together, back to the days of abolition park. The conversation then comes forward to the difficulties we’re still facing in organizing. Chillian ends the episode with a heartfelt note of appreciation for Black women and Trans folks in activism and organizing.
