Our teacher, Dr. John G. Mitchell speaks the three grounds for rejoicing observed in verses 3-5.

One is the importance and necessity of staying in the Word of God so that our faith may continue to grow. The other is that our love for one another may also increase and abound in reality.

This was the more evident in the church of the Thessalonians who were undergoing some severe persecutions and afflictions. So much so, the Apostle Paul was boasting of these young Christians to other churches about their patience in their tribulations.

These tribulations were evidence of their being counted worthy of the kingdom of God.

Should we not consider our afflictions to be such before God?

The Apostle Paul writes of giving thanks for these believers because their faith had increased exceedingly.

Dr. Mitchell brings out the fact that faith grows by hearing the Word of God, Rom.10:17, "Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of Christ."

This was Dr. Mitchell's desire, that one's faith in Christ would grow more and more as we spend time in the Word of God, reading and rereading it to see our Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ and the purposes of God for us who know Him.

It is encouraging to remember that the Lord Jesus prays for the believer in the Lord Jesus Christ, that his faith may not fail. Luke 22:31-32, Heb.7:25

The Unchanging Word Bible broadcast continues into 2 Thessalonians, the second letter the Apostle Paul wrote to the church in Thessalonica.

Dr. Mitchell begins by giving us an overview of the previous study in 1st Thessalonians to give us continuity between the two letters.

He then gives the two purposes of this second letter. First it was to correct some false doctrine these believers had received.

A fake letter had been written as if it had be written by Paul. So, Paul needed to write to them to correct the false teaching which they had heard. Paul wanted them to know that the day of the Lord had not yet come and needed to correct their understanding. He had previously taught them the truth, so he reminds them.

The second purpose of 2nd Thessalonians was to correct their conduct. Some had become lazy, indolent sponges on the congregation. They needed to straighten up.

In today's lesson, Paul concludes his

letter with a benediction an appeal

for prayer, an exhortation to greet

one another, and he charges them

to have this letter read out loud

to all the brethren.

In relating several other Biblical

descriptions for God in other New

Testament letters, Dr. Mitchell

focuses on the God of peace in verse

23 who will Himself set us apart for

Himself. He saves and redeems us

completely, spirit, soul and body.

God is faithful to do this and that

without a doubt, and full of joy.

To you, who believe, this is our

blessed hope when Jesus our Lord

believers, Dr. Mitchell, in the Unchanging

We are to test everything by the Word of God and the

we can hold on to what is good and abstain from

Our study in 1st Thessalonians chapter 5

resumes in verses 11-14. The Unchanging

Word is thankful for being able to bring

these studies in the Word of God from

Dr. John G. Mitchell, now home with the

Lord.

However, God's Word never changes

and these studies bring insights,

encouragements and assurance to our hearts.

Dr. Mitchell begins by explaining what

verse 9 means, how God has not destined

us to wrath, but to obtain salvation thru

our Lord Jesus Christ who died for us.

He then goes on to speak on the believer's conduct in the local assembly, the church found in verses 12-23. These have to do with our relationship to the local leadership and to the other believers in the church. There is to be no divisions in the church. It is required in stewards that we be found faithful to the Lord Jesus Christ and to His Word, the God breathed revelation of Scripture.

Paul writes how the believer is to live

in view of the coming of the Day of the Lord.

Please note the distinction Paul makes

between you and them, you and they,

between you and others in verses 5-7.

Dr. Mitchell brings out these distinctions

through scriptures which speak of the

conditions before the day of the Lord and our

responsibility during them. He speaks of

the application of putting on the breastplate

of faith and love and the helmet which is

the hope of salvation.

Do we have the breastplate of faith in what

Scripture says about Jesus and his

death for us? Do we have love for Christ

and for one another and for all people?

Dr. Mitchell speaks of our hope, our

deliverance from the wrath of God,

in 1Thess.5:4-11.

The coming of the Lord is a truth that

is currently of intense interest

among Christians. Here on the Unchanging

4:13 through chapter 5:5.

In this study, Dr. Mitchell brings out

the unique distinction designated by the

the Scripture's use of the words, "In

Christ" and how it is used in the Bible.

The Apostle Paul writes two lines

of truth in this passage. One line has to

do with the coming of the Lord Jesus for His

own, the church. The other has to do with

the day of the LORD when Christ returns to

the earth with His own to set up His kingdom.
