Unsigned518

A special episode dedicated to the Beat Battle happening at the Whiskey Pickle in Troy this Saturday (April 6th). It will be a Shmack Down between Buffalo and Cap City as several artist from each area go head to head in a beat battle. In this episode, I sat down with JB!! aka Dirty Moses and Jody Cowan of Beat Shot Music and we discuss exactly what you can expect at the Whiskey Pickle this weekend and what a Beat Battle is. Jody also makes a call out to western NY to speak with Grand Phee and get some more insight into the Shmack Down. We play a song from JB!! aka Dirty Moses and Jody puts together a little mash-up to get you hyped for the show.

While there is nothing but love between the participants of this Beat Battle, make no mistake about it, it will be a no-holds-barred throwdown, and sure to be a memorable experience for all who are there.

Unsigned518 - Episode 117 - Head Sound

The guys from Head Sound came by the Dazzle Den and brought along a Scandenavian liquor that we drank throughout the episode, which illicited fits of giggles more than once. In between laughing, we also talk about how Head Sound came together, their interesting approach to songwriting and whether or not Head Sound see themselves leaving the 518 for any touring. We also play a couple of songs from Head Sound. Dig into episode 117 of Unsigned518 and get to know Head Sound.

Beached Bodies are a duo that play ukelele-driven power pop. While known for their high-energy performances, they are also doing amazing work in the studio. They write their own songs and self-produce everything. They also have an interesting and effective way of getting some of the songs out of Shen's head and into reality. She will sing the melodies, so Will can craft parts of the song around it. Between Shen's lyrics and melodies, and Will's unique approach to the Ukelele, Beached Bodies should absolutely be in heavy-rotation on any 518 playlist. Get to know Will and Shen, aka Beached Bodies on episode 116 of Unsigned518.

On this weeks episode of Unsigned518's Weekend Spotlight, I pick a couple events to talk about, but also created kind of a "bonus episode" when Chris Castrio co-owner of Argyle Brewing Company stopped by so we could record a conversation about their upcoming 10 Year Anniversary party this weekend, which, in full disclosure I am also playing at. So after a couple of events, Amy's top picks from Around Town with Amy Modesti, and my weekly phone call with Frankie Cavone, I will play a few songs from artists playing at Argyle this weekend and talk with Chris.

Slainte!

What Christian and Patrick have created with Our Band Show is somethiing truly special. They are offering bands the chance to have an experience that I imagine parrellels being on a major-network TV show. They have an amazing video and audio set-up, with a top notch crew to match. If you are unfamiliar with what Our Band Show is, I implore you to not only check out this episode, but dig in to the content they have been putting out with some talented area bands, including not only my band ShortWave RadioBand, but my friends The Snorts and E.R.I.E. as well. There are so many great shows happening this weekend, that I would need a several-hours long episode to cover them all. So, I just pick a couple, but I encourage you to dig deeper and find a new band or venue to check out. You never know when or where you will find your new favorite band. On this episode, I read Amy Modesti's top picks of the weekend, check in with Frankie Cavone of Mirth Films, and I head down to White Lake Studios to talk with 3/5ths of The Sugar Hold who are there recording an EP. Alec Lewis is known for how many different facets of the 518 music scene that he is proficient in. Whether it is running sound, producing, mixing or performing, Alec has done it all. Now he has assembled a group of ultra-talented musicians and formed The Alec Lewis Group. Not, only that, but he also recently released the follow-up to 2022's "How Are We Fine", which was my favorite local release of '22.

Hear all about these endeavors and more on episode 114 of Unsigned518 with my good friend Alec Lewis.
