Stevin war Mathematiker und Erfinder. Er entwarf Mühlen, Schleusen, Baggermaschinen und sogar einen Segelwagen. Im Bereich der Physik bewies er das Gesetz vom Gleichgewicht auf einer schiefen Ebene und beschrieb in seinem Werk De Thiende die Dezimalschreibweise, durch die Berechnungen stark vereinfacht werden.

Im 16. Jahrhundert erfreute sich die Wissenschaft großer Beliebtheit. Das Studieren und Ergänzen antiker Texte bildete den Grundstein einer kritischen und unabhängigen Forschung. Früher war das erworbene Wissen nur in Handschriften verfügbar, jetzt konnte es gedruckt und in großer Auflage verbreitet werden. So entwickelten sich die Wissenschaften in rasender Geschwindigkeit. Den Behörden fehlte es an Mitteln, um diese Flut an Informationen und Erkenntnissen ausreichend zu überwachen.

The authorities do not know where to look first in trying to control this new influx of information and knowledge.
