Having staff is not always easy.

Technology is: It works, or it doesn’t.

People, on the other hand...

Yet, Justine Parsons from Your Virtual Assistant calls her team her biggest accomplishment in her business, the thing she’s most proud of. 😳

But when you speak with her, it’s also her team who seems to be the answer to whatever problem she’s facing.

To top it off, Justine‘s team seems to stick with her for the long haul, despite the fact that she only hires contractors.

Needless to say, she must be doing something right and I WANT TO KNOW WHAT IT IS.

If a contractor hire has been a lingering (but scary) thought, you should have Justine’s number on speed dial. What started with Virtual Assistants doing admin work, now also includes Virtual Specialists (like a graphic designer or a bookkeeper) or a Virtual Business Manager. It means you no longer to worry about any of the work you can’t, won’t, or shouldn’t be doing. You may just find it’s the best thing since sliced bread.

Usually my life is pretty calm and organised.

4 STEPS

That’s all it takes to bring in your ideal client. One who appreciates you, pays you fairly, lets you get on with the job, AND returns for more.

To jump or not to jump, that is the question!

I’m talking about a dilemma that most of us have at least mildly contemplated: Should you turn your passion into a business?

There’s plenty of opinion out there.

Here’s Oprah’s: “Forget about the fast lane. If you really want to fly, harness your power to your passion. Honour your calling. Everybody has one. Trust your heart, and success will come to you.”

But is it really that simple? (I, for one, have thought about it... and rejected the idea of turning my hobby into a business .)

Blaire Brown from Visionary Advantages Brand Strategy Group, on the other hand, made a career out of her passion for fashion.

The outcome may surprise you!

Blaire’s is also the host of her podcast ‘Curate Your Success’.

Her favourite guests are other go-getters who are brutally honest about their mistakes. And as much as it’s nice to hear people’s success stories (I am an encourager at heart!), it’s the mistakes other entrepreneurs make that hold the real lessons.

There’s some deep wisdom coming from Christi Cooper.

I ask her what her 3 tips for new service-based business owners are, and she gives me these three gems:

• Don’t give up. We all have low months, downtimes, bad days. Business gurus promise fast growth, but that’s not usually how things work. In the real world, things take time and it’s a more sustainable way of growing.
• Don’t be afraid to try and fail. That’s how you grow and learn.
• Take care of yourself. Don’t give up your whole life for your business. Family and friends are important.

If you ask me, Christi is spot on. Business gurus spoon-feed us this overly simplified idea that growing a business is as fast and easy as a Tesla in Ludicrous Mode.

But not only does that experience take you on a crazy ride that makes you scream in terror (ask me how I know), the likelihood of crashing at some stage is very real.

SO, what does it REALLY look like when you grow your business from scratch?

Christi Cooper generously shares her story. One where we can learn so much more from than from the hyped-up guru stories. Because that’s what they are... STORIES.

Christi Cooper is the designer and owner of Cooper Heart Creative. What started out as a side-hustle developed into a solid and successful business based on quality work, a top-notch client experience, and streamlined systems and processes. Did it happen overnight? Heck no! But then again, all good things take time!
