Is there anything more fascinating than a good Florida Man story? Join us this week as Loren tells one of the most disturbing Florida stories we've heard yet- the tale of Carl Tanzler and his unwilling love. Mentally prepare yourselves, because you're gonna need it for this one.

Carl Tanzler had many aliases. Born in Germany in 1877, he went by Georg Karl Tanzler, Carl Tanzler von Cosel, Carl von Cosel, and Count Carl Tanzler von Cosel. Our story really picks up in the spring of 1930m while he was working as a radiology technician with the Marine Hospital Service in Key West, Florida.

There, he met a lovely, but very ill, young woman by the name of Maria Elena Milagro de Hoyos. She was his dream girl, and given that there is absolutely no confirmation of her returning those feelings, we have to assume that he was likely not her dream guy. His love for her was enduring, though she quickly passed from this world.

This is where things take a really...disturbing turn. In 1940, the situation came to a head and Tanzler was arrested. What for? Tune in to hear the whole story!

A year later, they were seemingly reborn as Jennifer and Gillian. The two girls were twins, something that neither was predicted by the doctor, nor ran in either side of the family. Immediately, the family noticed physical similarities between the two sets of children, but it wasn't until they were somewhat older that things began to get a bit unsettling...

Elizabeth Bathory is reputed to have killed at least six hundred victims, earning her a Guinness World Record for most prolific female murderer. Her actions resulted in a nickname of the "Blood Countess". Elizabeth was accused of a haunting litany of crimes against both female servants and minor noblewomen who had come to her for training and education. Most of her alleged assaults and murders took place after she was widowed in 1604. 

Sounds like a pretty terrible woman, right?

Loren's about to dump a big ol' bucket of cold water on all of this with the revelation that Elizabeth may have been innocent and there's evidence to support it. Now, this is not to say she was a nice person. Her husband was off at war, and she had to manage an INCREDIBLE amount of business in his absence, even before he died – thousands of servants, governing the local populace, and handling an amount of property second to none.

Elisabeth Bathory needed everyone around her to know one thing, and one thing only: she was Head Bitch, and she had no time for your bullshit. Nothing about her was warm and cuddly. We absolutely believe she made life shitty for servants and likely many of the young noblewomen sent to her. It is beyond questioning that she beat the hell out of her servants, and some undoubtedly died from it. Mind you, we aren't excusing her behavior, but there's more to this story than first meets the eye. 

So what really happened? We can't know for sure, but we know that George Thurzo – Palatine of Hungary and dickass extraordinaire – played a huge role...

Join us this week as Anastasia takes us through water lily choked waterways to an island home to hundreds, if not thousands of unsettling inhabitants. Just south of Mexico City, between the canals of Xochimico you can find a small island with a sad background that was never intended to be a tourist destination. The island is known as Isla de las Munecas- The Island of the Dolls. 

The island is a chinampa- or floating garden- of the Laguna de Teshuilo and one of the main attractions of the channels. The owner, Don Julián Santana Barrera, found a young woman on the banks of the island, entangled in the lilies that grow thick through the canal. He began hearing whispers, voices, and footsteps, despite his hut being miles away from civilization.  

Driven by fear, he spent the next fifty years hanging more and more dolls, some missing body parts, all over the island in an attempt to appease what he believed to be the drowned girl's spirit.

Sloss Furnaces. A monument of pipes and towering stoves, this National Historic Landmark provides visitors a glimpse into where the "Magic City" of Birmingham began.

From 1882 to 1971, Birmingham’s Sloss Furnaces transformed coal and ore from surrounding acres into the hard steel that would pave the way for the industrial revolution. 

As with all progress, there was a price to be paid...and more than iron flowed from those furnaces.

Join us this week to hear the tale of the Erie Collar Bomber. Loren is bringing you a true crime full of twists, turns, and an evil mastermind who thought a little too highly of themself. This one will keep you on your toes- can you guess who was behind it all?

At 2:28 pm on August 28, 2003, a middle-aged pizza deliveryman named Brian Wells walked into a PNC Bank in Erie, Pennsylvania. He had a short cane in his right hand and a strange bulge under the collar of his T-shirt. He handed the teller a note demanding money and revealed that he had a bomb-like device strapped around his neck.

Sent on a clue hunt through the city, police swiftly hit a dead end in the strange scavenger hunt. A month later, events took another bizarre turn with a seemingly unrelated phone call from Bill Rothstein.  "At 8645 Peach Street, in the garage, there is a frozen body," he told the police dispatcher, referring to his own address. "It's in the freezer."

How on earth could these two events be related? You'll have to listen to find out...

Ashley Morin, an indigenous woman, went missing from North Battleford, Saskatchewan, on July 10, 2018. RCMP believe her to be a victim of homicide, but without any physical evidence, her case has remained open. Ashley's family and friends have searched for 2 years, mostly on their own, hoping to find her and discover the truth about what happened to her.

Her family knows where she most likely is. They fear that Ashley's remains will not last another winter, so time is running out. They are asking for public support to either convince government agencies to rent sonar equipment to scan bodies of water, or to raise the funds required to rent the equipment themselves. 

Native American women are 10 times more likely to be murdered and/or sexually assaulted. These crimes are ones that typically fall through the jurisdictional cracks, and leave victims and their families to deal with the aftermath as best they can on their own. 

We would like to thank Brandon Gerbig for sharing this interview with us and helping to turn the spotlight to this small town case. We truly hope that Ashley's loved ones are able to find closure and peace with the support of everyone sharing her story.
