Washed Up Walkons

Brady Ross returns to the show as a heavily requested guest. Brady was in the 2015 recruiting class for the Hawkeyes and ended up taking over Fullback responsibilities for the Hawks in 2018 and 2019 as well as splitting time with Drake in 2017. He is a great friend of the show, a wealth of knowledge in multiple conversations, and all around good dude.

The Paulsen Twins are back, and ready to entertain the fans again. They debuted on our show all the way back in Episode 088 which is the most common episode named when the discussion of "Best WUW ep ever" gets brought up. With one of the more unique stories out there, Levi and Landan continue to crush life and bring us up to date on all things Paulsen. They love to hunt, and might love preparing the meat they harvest even more, so much so that its now a hobby that could turn commercial. They both work for a Norwegian company selling video conferencing solutions, and they have a wild story about how they both ended up as part of the Volunteer Fire Department of Kalona, IA. We also discuss their weight loss and fitness journeys, which have been different parallel, and how Iowa Football and Coach Doyle crafted their mental toughness that they use to this day. They talk the reason for the increased effort towards health.. and a whole lot more. You don't want to miss a minute of this episode.

Ryan is from West Des Moines Iowa, and played high school football for Dowling Catholic. He was a standout athlete in the state of Iowa, leading Dowling to back to back State Titles in 2013 and 2014. He was name Gatorade Player of The Year in his senior season. Ryan saw early interest in recruiting from a variety of schools but grew up a Hawk fan, and talks about the visit that started to turn the tide on him eventually ending up in the Black and Gold. His career was unique, and saw him not only transfer out of Iowa after graduating in 3 years, but also try out multiple positions as a Hawkeye. He discusses the reasons for that, wanting to contribute and get playing time, and ultimately pursuing his full potential elsewhere. This conversation gets more serious or 'deep' than we often go on the Walkons, and shows some very real behind the scenes action of how a D1 football players journey is usually more than just roses.

Kevin talks about his golf game, we talk places to live and avoiding natural disasters, the potential of Kevin taking a job in Hawaii, then we get into real discussion about the Walkons opportunity to attend TEU and what our plans look like for that event. Are we getting an Airbnb or camping in Georges back yard, are we going to put together a workout montage at Georges new facility, and answers to plenty of other questions. Then Drake checks in from somewhere in Montana and tells us a quick viral story about getting pulled over in Yellowstone, which leads him to realizing that his identity was stolen. He also updates his on his van trip around the western United States. We dive into some reviews from the podcast platform where the WALKON ARMY gives their opinion on the show. We talk about former teammates and their spectrum of reaction when we ask them to be on the show, and talk about the 2013 Iowa class of linemen and how elite they were/could have been. Czinano got drafted and we discuss the WNBA as well as playing basketball overseas, which leads to a discussion on developmental leagues into the NFL, what the XFL is doing, and Kevin's chance to play football in Italy.

This episode takes us back all the way to Early 2019 when we brought on former All World linebacker and friend of the show Pat Angerer. Pat needs no introduction as he is one of the legends of Iowa Football, played for several years in the NFL for the Indianapolis Colts, and now lives back in Iowa selling life insurance or mortgages or something less cool.

Iowa/Clark v Reece talk starts at 28:00

In this episode we do some housekeeping and classic WUW banter to start. We break down the Walkon Bracket pool from March Madness and announce the winners, talk about pork, break down why some people are simply better than others, and then we get into the Caitlin Clark vs Angel Reese drama. Examining why Reese taunted Clark, how Clark handled the situation both on the court and afterwards in the media, what our reactions would have been, why it was different than Caitlins original gesture vs Louisville, and more. We finish by marveling at the unique position that Clark and Iowa are in, and how she is the perfect person to lead Women's basketball into its next level of significance.

Seth is from Sioux Falls, South Dakota. A product of Washington high school and one hell of an athlete bloodline. A typical under recruited kid relative to the D1 scene, he fielded offers from the Dakota schools and the like before the Hawks came knocking. After coming into the program with the head down work hard mindset, looking to get playing time on special teams, Seth found himself as a staple of those units already in year 2, and a starting Mike Linebacker in year 3. His career would blossom into 'one of the most underrated' of all time according to fellow LB Jack Campbell, and Seth was a vital part of the Hawkeye Defense for the last 3 seasons. We discuss his path to Iowa City, the crazy 2020 covid season, some of his favorite memories from the LB room, his plans after football and more!

This episode took a wild turn early, and somehow we bantered on about Triathlons, Iron Mans, Incredible athletic feats, David Goggins, our childhoods, and Drake's month long van trip across the western United States. That conversation sparks us talking about maps, how people used to get around without the internet, MapQuest, how elite the Blackberry phone was before iPhone, using OnStar, landline telephones, Drake hauling his 100 lb. tv with him to play video games at friends houses. A crazy trip to BestBuy in 2010, playing outside, building forts, what year we would like to go back to in our childhood. Blasting steroids, Drake's life expectancy, his disdain for Europe, and whole lot more.

The Iowa Women's Basketball team just pulled off one of the biggest upsets in program history, as they took down undefeated #1 overall seeded South Carolina to advance to the National Championship. The team and specifically Caitlin Clark have gone nuclear on social media and in the sports world. They are partly responsible for the current elevation of the sport as a whole, and Caitlin is on pace to become the greatest player in the History of the sport. We decided we should talk about it all.
