Bleat all you want, but the film is a return to form for Lanthimos’ singular, visceral filmmaking. Is this triptych with a cast of regular Lanthimos players (Emma Stone, Willem DaFoe, Margret Qualley) the whole Lobster entree and dessert or is it a painful experience like the killing of a sacred deer?

Featuring a full throttle cast of newcomers and veteran character actors and Nichols’ chrome pedigree, pic is chopped for potential award-season mileage. But is this “Goodfellas” meets “Sons of Anarchy” worthy of its leather-studded colors or is it a rough ride with no air in the tires and water in the gas tank?

QUIT THRASHING ABOUT IN THE WATER AND LIFE-PRESERVER OUR NEW EPISODE!

The Boys dive into the streaming waters again and take on the French shark thriller Under Paris. Directed by new wave French horror director Xavier Gens - who counts as his new wave compadres Alexandre Aja (“High Tension”), Bustillo and Maury (“Inside”), and Pascal Laugier (“Martyrs”) - Sous La Seine (it’s original French title) chums viewer expectations with the ultimate B movie Jaws-ripoff scenario: a shark in the Seine and the catacombs of Paris. Will streaming audiences take a bite out of this thriller that has plot points touching on evolution and climate change in addition to people getting chewed up Richard Shaw style or is this an uneven paced, cringe acting, lousy CGI a la SyFy cold fish? 

For his plus, Emcee talks “State of the Movie Union” now that we are halfway through the film release year….there will be stats/numbers, business talk, and #saveexhibition. Cupcake takes loyal listener Chris “Judd” Hoover’s suggestion and ventures into the theatres to “watch” an M. Night Shyamalan-adjacent film.

With nine years between this one and the stunning Mad Max: Fury Road (widely regarded as a “perfect” action film), will audiences take to this messianic origin story that is quite different from any other film in the franchise or leave it, Miller, and those hungering for a direct sequel to Fury Road on the shoulder and looking for a tow? Warning…bad Tina Turner/Auntie Entity impressions ahead.
