This week, we profile some of the big winners from the 2021 Young Achiever Awards! Winner of the Rural Doctors Workforce Agency Rural Health Award, 21 year-old Tessa Deak from Mount Gambier has been a strong advocate for people living with disability and chronic illness. Hosting a Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME) Awareness Night, she’s shared her story to help others understand her circumstances and not shy away from difficult topics. She’s also started a support group on Facebook, which led to her coordinating events like the Wellness and Wellbeing Festival and further her career on disability awareness and education. We also chat to the South Australian Young Achiever of the Year, Dr Trudy Lin. 28 years-old and from Kensington Park, she is one of only five registered Special Needs Dentists in the state. Sharing what it’s meant to provide oral healthcare to those with disability and psychiatric illnesses, Trudy gives us a glimpse into her world and what the award means to her.

Also on the show, we take a look at the budding opportunities at Lot 14 after the government released the state budget in favor of supporting the precinct. With companies like Google and Amazon already involved, fresh jobs are being generated. For young Aussies looking to get their foot in the workforce, State Project Lead Di Dixon walks us through how people can go about reskilling to be the right fit for the job.

Young people are increasingly taking on new ways to smoke, with many teens and adults familiar with e-cigarettes and vaping. For those aged 18-24, the use of these devices has doubled since 2013. But with it so new to the market, how is being sold to teens and what is it doing to our bodies in the long term? To get to bottom of it, Associate Professor Jonine Jancey from the School of Public Health at Curtin University gave us all the details. While the popularity of cigarettes’ electronic counterparts has grown, an estimated 11.6% of Aussie adults are smoking traditional nicotine regularly. Seeing there still remains a need to help people quit, a study at Flinders University has opened its doors to find participants from low socio-economic backgrounds. To see whether mindful and behavioural techniques may help smokers give up the cig, Research Fellow Elissa Mortimer talks to us about the aim of the study.

Also on the show, we take a look at the community initiative Salty Sips, which has Adelaideians meet every Wednesday at 6:30am to have a sunrise swim and cup of coffee at Joe’s in Henley Square. Cryptocurrencies are often touted as the future of finance, but is this actually the case? Whether it’s Bitcoin, Dogecoin, even Ethereum, these forms of currency are often volatile as we’ve seen recently after Elon Musk simply tweeted about his company no longer accepting Bitcoin. So could they actually be the future of payment, and what concerns surround them? Wavelength had a chat to Kunal Sawhney from Kalkine Media about the practicalities of these cryptocurrencies. We also spoke to local artist David Court who is getting into NFTs (non-fungible tokens), to find out how they influence the crypto and blockhain space.

Meanwhile, Victoria’s been in lockdown following a number of COVID-19 cases emerging in Melbourne. Despite a sluggish start to the vaccine rollout, these new cases have seen a major spike in demand for COVID jabs. Currently, there are 430,000 participants in the NDIS. Under a new government proposal, they would be required to undergo a mandatory assessment with government-contracted health professionals rather than providing evidence from their own doctors and specialists. While the scheme would be free of charge, it has received considerable pushback from disability advocates, as well as Labor and the Greens. To better understand how this would affect NDIS participants and the issues with the scheme, we talked to President of People with Disability Australia Samantha Connor.

Also on the show, we chat to Dr Lane about the annual awareness campaign “Exercise Right Week”. At the end of every May, the movement aims to highlight the benefits of getting active and looking after your health. Dr Lane gives us the run down on how 30 minutes a day can help our body and minds in the long term.
