Cryptocurrencies are often touted as the future of finance, but is this actually the case? Whether it’s Bitcoin, Dogecoin, even Ethereum, these forms of currency are often volatile as we’ve seen recently after Elon Musk simply tweeted about his company no longer accepting Bitcoin. So could they actually be the future of payment, and what concerns surround them? Wavelength had a chat to Kunal Sawhney from Kalkine Media about the practicalities of these cryptocurrencies. We also spoke to local artist David Court who is getting into NFTs (non-fungible tokens), to find out how they influence the crypto and blockhain space.
Meanwhile, Victoria’s been in lockdown following a number of COVID-19 cases emerging in Melbourne. Despite a sluggish start to the vaccine rollout, these new cases have seen a major spike in demand for COVID jabs. But why are we still rolling it out in phases and how important is being vaccinated? We spoke with Catherine Bennett, the Chair of Epidemiology at Deakin University, to find out more. Also this week, Wavelength looks into the defamation case surrounding former Federal Attorney-General Christian Porter and why it all came to a bit of an abrupt ending. We also let you know the latest goings on of the week and put a brighter spin on things in Heaps Good News. Listen in!

Currently, there are 430,000 participants in the NDIS. Under a new government proposal, they would be required to undergo a mandatory assessment with government-contracted health professionals rather than providing evidence from their own doctors and specialists. While the scheme would be free of charge, it has received considerable pushback from disability advocates, as well as Labor and the Greens. To better understand how this would affect NDIS participants and the issues with the scheme, we talked to President of People with Disability Australia Samantha Connor.
Also on the show, we chat to Dr Lane about the annual awareness campaign “Exercise Right Week”. At the end of every May, the movement aims to highlight the benefits of getting active and looking after your health. Dr Lane gives us the run down on how 30 minutes a day can help our body and minds in the long term. To keep up to you speed, we also explain the new affirmative consent laws passed in New South Wales and sprinkle in some Heaps Good News.

With Adelaide dubbed the “cannabis capital” of Australia, it’s clear more and more people are becoming open to the idea of using the drug. But when it comes to medical practice, what kind of benefits can it bring?
To understand how cannabis works, we talked to Body Mind Psychic Expo and Australian Hemp & Cannabis Expo Organiser Alex Fragnito. And to see how current laws are impacting people’s lives, we sit down with cannabis advocate Jenny Hallam, who was spared conviction after providing the drug to terminally ill people who sought her help.
Also on the show, we look into how the video game industry is receiving a nationwide 30% federal tax offset. With the investment expected to incentivise development, there’s hopes the move will lead to more Australian games. To understand what this means for game developers, Gameloft Studio Manager Dylan Miklashek joins us to give industry insight and assess whether this puts Aussie developers in a position to compete on the world stage.
To keep you in the loop, we also give you a run down on what’s been going on this week and finish it off with heaps good news. Listen to Wavelength live and join the convos about Adelaide you should be having, every Monday night from 6pm on Fresh 92.7.

With events like Black Summer and more recently, the 2021 Eastern Australian floods, it has become impossible to ignore the natural disasters happening in Australia. With two ‘once in a century’ disasters happening only a year apart, are we prepared for what’s to come? In order to understand how the change is climate is contributing to extreme weather, we were joined by Professor of Biology (Macquarie University) and Climate Council Councillor Lesley Hughes. To better prepare for these events, the government is establishing a National Resilience, Relief and Recovery Agency with the aim to support local communities when responding to large-scale natural disasters. To see what strategies will be implemented and how it will work with existing agencies, we talked to the Minister for Agriculture, Drought and Emergency Management David Littleproud.
Also on the show, we take a look into a new bar joining Adelaide’s nightlife called My Lover Cindi. Overflowing with crowds on opening night, the space caught people’s attention due to its desire to be a queer safe-space that is disability friendly. We sit down and have a chat with co-owner Kate Toone about the new space and what inspired its creation. And to keep you in the loop, we also give a run down on what’s been happening with India’s COVID-19 crisis.

30 years on since the 1991 report into Indigenous deaths in custody and the preceding Royal Commission looking into the issue, we are still seeing a startlingly high number of these deaths. Since the start of March, we've seen 7 First Nations people pass away in custody. So why is this still happening and what can be done to change it? Tammy Franks MLC, a Member of the Greens in the SA Parliament, and Quentin Agais, a Ngadjuri Elder who runs aboriginal culture tours on the Yorke Peninsula and other parts of the state, spoke with us about the issue, and what we can do to help.
Meanwhile, we sat down to chat with Dr Guy Turnbull, the Lead Entrepreneur and Co-Director at Rapid Enterprise Development, as well as store owner Charlie Stone, to chat about their efforts to help Adelaide's disabled community to build their own businesses. Also on the show, we look into just when we can expect international travel to open back up. To wrap up, we look into the major stories of the week and put a smile on your dial in Heaps Good News. Tune in!

Consent classes have now been made mandatory for students in Victoria after concerns the issue wasn't being adequately and openly addressed in the education system. As a result, there’s been a call on other Australian states and territories to follow the example and teach students about sexual consent. So, should it be implemented to help kids understand what consent means? We talked to advocate Chanel Contos about the issue, who shed light on the experiences Sydney schoolgirls had with their male peers regarding sexual assault.
Also on the show, we look into another law that SA might take inspiration from. In February this year, a private members bill was introduced to remove criminal penalties for the possession of small amounts of certain drugs like ecstasy and methamphetamine. While most Aussies support decriminalisation, is this something that could be implemented as law? Michael Pettersson from the ACT Legislative Assembly gave us the run down on the bill he’s planning to pass through parliament. To keep you in the loop, we also give a run down on the controversy surrounding Ben-Roberts Smith and perk you up with some Heaps Good News.

Refugees have never been far from the news over the past few years here in Australia, particularly since the election of the Coalition Federal Government back in 2013. The government has made no apologies for its strategy to stop people seeking asylum by boat, and has often drawn flak for its offshore detention programmes. Here in Adelaide, around 10 men are currently in temporary detention, some of whom have been been given refugee status, meaning they can't be sent back to their country of origin. We spoke to Mohammad Bavie, a refugee originating from Iran who's actually currently stuck in detention here, to hear his story. Adjunct Professor Alex Reilly from the University of Adelaide also walked us through the legal side of the issue.
Also this week, we dive into the UN's Youth Programme which aims to give Aussie youth a voice on issues important to them. 2021 UN Youth Representative Lucy Stronach had a chat with us about her story and her journey around the country to find out what kind of future the youth want to build.
Meanwhile we fill you in on the Coronavirus vaccine slowdown, as well as some of the other major stories from the last week. Listen in!

With hundreds of homes being left vacant in the Adelaide CBD, the idea of a vacancy tax has popped up to help those sleeping rough on the streets and make sure landlords don’t keep their properties empty. So would a vacancy tax provide the right incentive to help the homeless? We talk to Shelter SA CEO Alice Clark and the Australian Alliance to End Homelessness CEO David Pearson about the options available to combat the issue plaguing hundreds in the city. To get the government’s perspective in the issue, we chat to Minister for Human Service Michelle Lensink about what’s already being done to try and help.
After widespread media coverage surrounding the culture in Parliament house, we look in local service Yarrow House and how they provide support for victims of rape and sexual assault. Manager Katrina Dee shares all the details about how the service operates and gives crisis and medical support for those 12 and older. To keep you up to date, we also give the run-down on what’s been going on this week and sprinkle in some good news to cheer you up!

Chances are you've heard about the escalating feud between Paramedics and the State Government in recent weeks. There are concerns over growing times spent ramping at hospitals, delays in sending out ambulances and tough working conditions, with paramedics resorting to industrial action such as not charging patients for certain trips. While the State Government says it's committed to addressing these issues, there's no end in sight to the feud. To find out more, we had a chat with Leah Watkins, the Industrial Officer for the Ambulance Employees Association, as well as paramedics Jim Murchland and Lynsey Irwin, about their experiences.
Also this week, there are so many diets out there, but what's the best one for our health, and what does the latest research say? We spoke with dietician Frances Walker to get the latest on food and what's best for our bodies.
Meanwhile, the protests in Myanmar have attracted a lot of attention in recent weeks, with over two hundred people killed while protesting against the military coup.
