  • Is the raise to JobSeeker good enough? (15 March, 2021)

With the government announcing a raise to JobSeeker (formerly known as NewStart) for the first time since 1994, welfare groups have been left dissatisfied with the $25 weekly increase. To get to the bottom of whether the implementation is reasonable, we talked to Dr Jeff Borland from the University of Melbourne about how raising the rate to $125 per week would still provide people with an incentive to find work. And for those who are young and out of home, it can often be difficult to receive assistance as the system looks at the income of your parents or partner. So even if you don’t receive financial support from them, why is Centrelink still turning you away? We deep dive into the gaps within the system with AUWU Spokesperson Kristin O’Connell.

Also on the show, we look into courses that treat mental health just as importantly as our physical health. Much like the first-aid courses we are given as children and adults, there are now courses which offer training for the public to deal with incidents of mental health. Talking to Dr Claire Kelly from Mental Health First Aid Australia, we discuss how this can help us become better equipped when stressful situations arise. Meanwhile, digital art has found its place online, with artist Beeple selling their original piece of work for $69 million. While it sounds absurd, we give you all the details on how this market has took off. To try and make you smile, we wrap up the show with all the good news happening right now!

  • Should we still be pre-ordering video games? (1 March, 2021)

Chances are you may have heard about Cyberpunk 2077 over the past few months. Built up over years as one of the most ambitious video games of all time, the game launched last December to outrage over its serious technical issues. So with this sort of situation increasingly happening for new releases, should we reconsider pre-ordering games when they're not guaranteed to be playable? We spoke with Alex Walker, the Editor of gaming website Kotaku Australia, as well as Lawyer Daniel Marquet from Corrs Chambers Westgarth, to get the lowdown on the situation.

Also this week, the stigma around periods and how it affects women accessing sanitary products has long been an issue, however one young woman's been recognised for her efforts to fight it. Isobel Marshall, who's just become the SA Young Australian of the Year, spoke with us along with her TABOO co-founder Eloise Hall, about their work to provide sanitary products to woman in need.

Meanwhile, the past couple of weeks have seen multiple allegations of sexual assault spring up around Parliament House in Canberra. The controversy has led to questions over who knew what and when they knew it, all the while complaints continue to stack up. We fill you in on all the details. The show wraps up with a look at the brighter stories from the past week, so listen in!

  • What alternatives are out there to combat addiction besides the 12 step program (22 February, 2021)

In Australia, the 12 step recovery program has been one of the most prominent forms of drug and alcohol rehabilitation available for those struggling with addiction.

But while traditional methods may work for some, there are new alternatives being offered to help people struggling with addiction.

We get insight from someone who has gone through Alcoholics Anonymous and SMART recovery, learning about what helped them remain sober for 12 years.

We also deep dive into the alternative rehab available for struggling addicts and chat with Program Manager Dan Raffell, who shares all the details about SMART recovery and how group sessions are built on choice and creating better lifestyles for those trying to recover.

Also on the show, we debunk the myths surrounding HIV/AIDS with Dr Travis Brown from Clinpath.

With a 20% decline of HIV cases among the gay and bisexual men in the past 5 years, we look into the state of HIV in Australia and the precautions those at risk should take in order to practice safe sex.

We also give you up to date news about What the Hell is going on this week and explain the vaccine roll-out in Australia.

  • Venues popping up in the COVID-Era (15 February, 2021)

COVID-19's taken a bat to local businesses over the last year, but in defiance of this global pandemic we're all living through, a number of new venues are popping up all over Adelaide and are actually doing pretty well. So what's their secret? We chat to the operators of three new venues to find out.

Meanwhile, it's a story you may not have heard about but it's definitely an important issue. The Metropolitan Fire Service (MFS) is currently in a stoush with the State Government over resources, with no end in sight. We spoke with the United Firefighters Union of South Australia to get some more insight.

Also this week, we delve into the alleged assault at Funtea and the controversy surrounding the situation. We also look at some uplifting stories and examine what the hell's been going on in the news this week. Listen in!

  • What will this year's Fringe and RCC look like in COVID-19 world? (8 February, 2021)

With the Adelaide Fringe fast approaching, there’s an air of excitement since the large-scale event got the green light despite concerns surrounding coronavirus. Although a lot of what we love about it will still be there, it’s only natural things will be slightly different from usual. We get all the details about how the Fringe will run this year from Fringe Director and CEO Heather Croall. To understand what’s it been like for artists who will finally get to perform, Werk It performers Malia Walsh and Lilikoi Kaos share their experiences and what the Fringe going ahead means to them. Also making a comeback this year is the RCC, which will be returning to its home base in Victoria Square. Having announced its headline act as The Stables, Creative Director Stuart Duckworth shares with us what we'll get to see in the heart of Adelaide.

Also on the show, we look at the privatisation of Adelaide’s metropolitan rail service. Since the start of February, French company Kelios Downer has taken over the state’s network for the next eight years. We talked to Australian Labor Party’s Leader of Opposition Peter Malinauskas about the lack of staff, passenger services and preparation in the new take-over.

And with a new year, comes new segments! We introduce What the Hell is Going On This Week? Expanding our horizons from the original segment that focused on politics. In Wavo Explains, we give you everything you need to know about the current situation surrounding dancing in clubs. To finish it off, Heaps Good News is sprinkled in to cheer you up.

  • How have our hospo workers copped it under new Covid restrictions? (14 December, 2020)?

This year has definitely flipped our worlds upside down, with small businesses most notably trying to keep their heads above water. With the on and off lockdowns in Adelaide, it’s tested the patience of people who want to go out and enjoy themselves. To understand how operations have changed and where things need to improve, Managing Partner of Maybe Mae Ollie Margan gave us insight into what it’s been like to run a business during a global pandemic. While most customers have been understanding of the situation, there is also the flip side. Taking out their anger and frustrations on others, hospitality workers Lia and India share the ugly side of what it’s been like to work in an environment that is constantly changing due to restrictions.

Also on the show, we dive into the alternative medications people are taking to treat their struggles with mental illness. While current medicines involve anti-depressants, mood stabilisers and antipsychotic prescriptions, new avenues to help people are being explored. Substances such as Psilocybin and MDMA are being trialed around the world to see if they can be more effective than the current drugs prescribed to patients. We talked to Executive Director of Mind Medicine Australia Tania de Jong about how evidence-based psychedelic-assisted therapies have helped those with mental illness and when it may be readily available to help those in Australia.

We also have you covered on the latest news surrounding COVID-19 and end this tumultuous year with some Heaps Good News. Listen to Wavelength live and join the convos about Adelaide you should be having, every Monday night from 6pm on Fresh 92.7.

  • What is Shibari, the sexy Japanese art form, that has Adelaide all tied up? (7 December, 2020)

It's a bit of a kinky episode this week with our deep dive into the world of Shibari rope bondage. It's an old Japanese art form that's been steadily gaining in popularity with people from all age groups, and even sometimes extends into the bedroom. So what exactly is Shibari all about? What's the draw of it? How can we normalise it and how do you do it while staying safe? Shane from Shibari Adelaide, who teaches the practice, walks us through how it all works and how to get involved. Rachel (aka Lumia Lemae), a Shibari model here in Adelaide, also spoke to us about her journey into this art form and what makes it enjoyable.

Also this week, body image is a big issue for men, particularly with the stream of superhero movies showing (let's be honest) a generally unattainable muscular physique. It can be a big source of anxiety and self-doubt for many. We spoke with Kelvin and Dan, two male strippers, about the issue and their recommendations for self-improvement.

Meanwhile we have all the bases covered with the latest on the COVID-19 pandemic, politics and some Heaps Good News. Tune in!

  • The future of festivals - how do we make them work in a world with coronavirus? (30 November, 2020)

Although it’s been hard to gain a sense of normalcy this year, some Aussie music festivals have managed to run successfully despite the fact we’re living in a pandemic. Like, up in Darwin, where The Rebound Festival had people come together on October 3rd to enjoy live music without social distancing or capacity caps. To understand how organisers pulled it off, publicity manager Elle Worthington joined us to share the details on the biggest hurdles they faced.

On the other side of the globe, CEO and Artistic Director of Capsule Lisa Meyer gave us insight into how things are unfolding in the UK and what event organisers are doing to cope during this tumultuous period. To try and anticipate what the future of live music may look like, Marketing Professor Alex Skandalis (University of Lancaster) also shared his views.

Also on the show, we delve into the backstory of Sober in The Country and how the charity provides support for alcoholics in rural areas. With limited access to health services, people out in the country are more likely to hit the drink, and hit it harder. CEO and Founder Shanna Whan joined us to share her personal story and how the organisation works to help connect others online.

In case you want a run down on what’s been happening in politics, we’ve got you covered and we also let you know the latest updates surrounding coronavirus, capping it all off with some (much needed) Heaps Good News.

  • Adelaide's "Circuit Breaker" Special - all your questions answered! (23 November, 2020)

The so called Parafield Cluster has quickly taken over our lives in the past week and we're here with a special episode of Wavelength dedicated entirely to covering what's been happening. First off, we give you a quick recap of the last week, then Professor Nigel McMillan, an Infectious Diseases expert from Griffith University, spoke with us about this latest COVID outbreak, the lockdown and the potential for an effective vaccine.

Meanwhile, mental health remains a big concern at the moment, and our resident medical expert Dr. Lane discussed the impact of the current outbreak on how we're feeling and what help is available. SA's Deputy Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Emily Kirkpatrick as well as Professor Adrian Esterman from the University of South Australia also gave us the lowdown on this particular strain of the virus that's hit us so hard over the past week.

And to wrap it all up, hotel quarantine is believed to be the original source of our current cluster so does the system need a bit of an overhaul? We spoke with Professor Catherine Bennett, the Chair in Epidemiology at Deakin University, to get her thoughts on the controversial issue. You can also hear the latest on everything political over the past week and turn that frown upside down with plenty of Heaps Good News. Listen in!

  • Why don't we have enough female politicians in SA? (16 November, 2020)

SA was once the frontrunner when it came to involving women in politics, being the first state to allow women to vote and stand in parliament. But in the current era, it’s fallen behind the rest of the nation. With only 29% of SA’s parliament consisting of women, it’s estimated that gender parity won’t be reached until 2050. So, what’s happened? We talked to senior researcher at the Australian Electoral Commission Daniel Marx about the numbers and what it means for female members of parliament. To get a firsthand account from women in politics, we also talked to SA Best member Connie Bonaros and Irene Pnevmatikos from SA’s Labor Party.

Also on the show, we deep-dived into RED (Rapid Enterprise Development) and their mission to help those with disabilities get into the world of business and enterprise. Providing support and allowing those with disabilities to start their own small businesses, RED has given people a space to chase their passions. CEO Dr Guy Turnbull gave us the run down on his personal journey and the inspiring stories of those who started their own projects.

We also keep you up to speed on what’s been going in politics, give you an update on the coronavirus and tell you about all the Heaps Good News going on. Tune in!
