This week on Wavelength, we discuss the proposed changes to the legalisation of sex work. The SA Police Commissioner Grant Stevens recently weighed in on the topic, stating he would only support the notion if a number of regulations were introduced to stop an ‘insurgence’ or organised crime into the industry.

To understand more about this debate, Amila spoke to the general manager of SIN (Sex Industry Network) Kat Morrison for more insight. Later in the show, David interviews the sex worker BigBoy to understand how the problem differs from interstate and to better comprehend the differences between decriminalisation and legalisation of sex work.

Meanwhile, we also take a look at what’s been going on this week, including Scott Morrison travelling interstate for Father’s Day and NSW Premier Gladys ditching daily press announcements. We also have a chat about the new stance from Qantas, saying they will ban unvaccinated people from flying overseas.

It's a very chatty episode of Wavelength this week, as we discuss South Australia's ongoing mask mandate. While South Australians endured a week of lockdown to keep COVID-19 at bay, our neighbours have not been so lucky. This week, we profile some of the big winners from the 2021 Young Achiever Awards! Winner of the Rural Doctors Workforce Agency Rural Health Award, 21 year-old Tessa Deak from Mount Gambier has been a strong advocate for people living with disability and chronic illness. Hosting a Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME) Awareness Night, she’s shared her story to help others understand her circumstances and not shy away from difficult topics. She’s also started a support group on Facebook, which led to her coordinating events like the Wellness and Wellbeing Festival and further her career on disability awareness and education. We also chat to the South Australian Young Achiever of the Year, Dr Trudy Lin. 28 years-old and from Kensington Park, she is one of only five registered Special Needs Dentists in the state. Sharing what it’s meant to provide oral healthcare to those with disability and psychiatric illnesses, Trudy gives us a glimpse into her world and what the award means to her.

Also on the show, we take a look at the budding opportunities at Lot 14 after the government released the state budget in favor of supporting the precinct. With companies like Google and Amazon already involved, fresh jobs are being generated. For young Aussies looking to get their foot in the workforce, State Project Lead Di Dixon walks us through how people can go about reskilling to be the right fit for the job.

Young people are increasingly taking on new ways to smoke, with many teens and adults familiar with e-cigarettes and vaping. For those aged 18-24, the use of these devices has doubled since 2013. But with it so new to the market, how is being sold to teens and what is it doing to our bodies in the long term? To get to bottom of it, Associate Professor Jonine Jancey from the School of Public Health at Curtin University gave us all the details. While the popularity of cigarettes’ electronic counterparts has grown, an estimated 11.6% of Aussie adults are smoking traditional nicotine regularly. Seeing there still remains a need to help people quit, a study at Flinders University has opened its doors to find participants from low socio-economic backgrounds. To see whether mindful and behavioural techniques may help smokers give up the cig, Research Fellow Elissa Mortimer talks to us about the aim of the study.

Also on the show, we take a look at the community initiative Salty Sips, which has Adelaideians meet every Wednesday at 6:30am to have a sunrise swim and cup of coffee at Joe’s in Henley Square. Founded on the idea of bringing people together, organisers Nikita Trewartha and Lily Bigg talk about how the idea came to be and how it has helped over 200 people connect in the frosty morning ocean. To top off the news week, we also look into the lawsuit Epic Games is filing against Apple and give you some Heaps Good News.
