With Adelaide dubbed the “cannabis capital” of Australia, it’s clear more and more people are becoming open to the idea of using the drug. But when it comes to medical practice, what kind of benefits can it bring?

To understand how cannabis works, we talked to Body Mind Psychic Expo and Australian Hemp & Cannabis Expo Organiser Alex Fragnito. And to see how current laws are impacting people’s lives, we sit down with cannabis advocate Jenny Hallam, who was spared conviction after providing the drug to terminally ill people who sought her help.

Also on the show, we look into how the video game industry is receiving a nationwide 30% federal tax offset. With the investment expected to incentivise development, there’s hopes the move will lead to more Australian games. Unemployment, It’s a figure that’s constantly on the mind of South Australian’s and in particular young South Australia.

For those who missed it Johnny from Brekky and Zane had a chat with State Premier Steven Marshall about the challenges South Australia have to tackle and how to lower South Australia’s youth unemployment rate of 15%.

Also on the show we take a look at One Nation State Leader Mark Latham who’s recently introduced a Bill in NSW which has drawn heavy criticism for its direct attacks on the LGBTQI+ community.

Many have labelled The Education Legislation Amendment (Parental Rights) Bill 2020 as incredibly harmful – as it actively denies the existence of trans people.

• prohibits schools from teaching that trans and gender diverse people exist and should be treated with respect;
• prohibits school counsellors from affirming a trans or gender diverse student or providing them with any support or referrals to gender affirming support;
• puts teachers at risk of losing their job when they support a trans or gender diverse student in affirming their identity;
• eshrines biological fallacies, describing intersex people as disordered;
• allows parents to deny their children access to lessons in public schools which may contradict their political, social or personal values, including their views about LGBTIQ+ people; 
• requires schools to present discredited counter narratives when teaching classes like science or history.  For example, discussing creationism when teaching evolution, raising anti-vaccination theories when teaching about immunisation, or raising racist ideologies to explain the over representation of First Nations people in prison.

Our reporter Hamish sat down with Pat a trans man who transition journey began in his final year of high school, and what it would’ve meant for him had a bill like this been in effect when he first began transitioning.

With events like Black Summer and more recently, the 2021 Eastern Australian floods, it has become impossible to ignore the natural disasters happening in Australia. With two ‘once in a century’ disasters happening only a year apart, are we prepared for what’s to come? In order to understand how the change is climate is contributing to extreme weather, we were joined by Professor of Biology (Macquarie University) and Climate Council Councillor Lesley Hughes. To better prepare for these events, the government is establishing a National Resilience, Relief and Recovery Agency with the aim to support local communities when responding to large-scale natural disasters. To see what strategies will be implemented and how it will work with existing agencies, we talked to the Minister for Agriculture, Drought and Emergency Management David Littleproud.

Also on the show, we take a look into a new bar joining Adelaide’s nightlife called My Lover Cindi. Overflowing with crowds on opening night, the space caught people’s attention due to its desire to be a queer safe-space that is disability friendly. 30 years on since the 1991 report into Indigenous deaths in custody and the preceding Royal Commission looking into the issue, we are still seeing a startlingly high number of these deaths. Since the start of March, we've seen 7 First Nations people pass away in custody. So why is this still happening and what can be done to change it? Tammy Franks MLC, a Member of the Greens in the SA Parliament, and Quentin Agais, a Ngadjuri Elder who runs aboriginal culture tours on the Yorke Peninsula and other parts of the state, spoke with us about the issue, and what we can do to help.

Consent classes have now been made mandatory for students in Victoria after concerns the issue wasn't being adequately and openly addressed in the education system. As a result, there’s been a call on other Australian states and territories to follow the example and teach students about sexual consent. So, should it be implemented to help kids understand what consent means? We talked to advocate Chanel Contos about the issue, who shed light on the experiences Sydney schoolgirls had with their male peers regarding sexual assault.

Also on the show, we look into another law that SA might take inspiration from. In February this year, a private members bill was introduced to remove criminal penalties for the possession of small amounts of certain drugs like ecstasy and methamphetamine. While most Aussies support decriminalisation, is this something that could be implemented as law? Michael Pettersson from the ACT Legislative Assembly gave us the run down on the bill he’s planning to pass through parliament. Refugees have never been far from the news over the past few years here in Australia, particularly since the election of the Coalition Federal Government back in 2013. The government has made no apologies for its strategy to stop people seeking asylum by boat, and has often drawn flak for its offshore detention programmes. Here in Adelaide, around 10 men are currently in temporary detention, some of whom have been been given refugee status, meaning they can't be sent back to their country of origin. We spoke to Mohammad Bavie, a refugee originating from Iran who's actually currently stuck in detention here, to hear his story. Adjunct Professor Alex Reilly from the University of Adelaide also walked us through the legal side of the issue.

Also this week, we dive into the UN's Youth Programme which aims to give Aussie youth a voice on issues important to them. 2021 UN Youth Representative Lucy Stronach had a chat with us about her story and her journey around the country to find out what kind of future the youth want to build.

With hundreds of homes being left vacant in the Adelaide CBD, the idea of a vacancy tax has popped up to help those sleeping rough on the streets and make sure landlords don’t keep their properties empty. So would a vacancy tax provide the right incentive to help the homeless? We talk to Shelter SA CEO Alice Clark and the Australian Alliance to End Homelessness CEO David Pearson about the options available to combat the issue plaguing hundreds in the city. To get the government’s perspective in the issue, we chat to Minister for Human Service Michelle Lensink about what’s already being done to try and help.

After widespread media coverage surrounding the culture in Parliament house, we look in local service Yarrow House and how they provide support for victims of rape and sexual assault. Chances are you've heard about the escalating feud between Paramedics and the State Government in recent weeks. There are concerns over growing times spent ramping at hospitals, delays in sending out ambulances and tough working conditions, with paramedics resorting to industrial action such as not charging patients for certain trips. While the State Government says it's committed to addressing these issues, there's no end in sight to the feud. To find out more, we had a chat with Leah Watkins, the Industrial Officer for the Ambulance Employees Association, as well as paramedics Jim Murchland and Lynsey Irwin, about their experiences.

With the government announcing a raise to JobSeeker (formerly known as NewStart) for the first time since 1994, welfare groups have been left dissatisfied with the $25 weekly increase.
