Welcome to the twelth edition of CULT WEEK! This is the week where we tell you about the worst cults we can think of – so get ready to have your entire day ruined!

This week, we’re talking Raelism and Colonia Dignidad – and, one of these cults is NOT like the others, in that one is a fun sex cult where no one gets hurt and the other is a terrible Nazi cult where everyone is beaten and not allowed to talk to one another. So, this is going to be a great time.

Dreia is first up this week and she’s going to tell us all about Claude (aka Raal), who is the founder of Raelism. Once, Claude climbed a volcano and was abducted by benevolent aliens. After he was probed, they told him that they had impregnated the Earth (gross) with humans and that he now gets to have all the secrets of life and stuff. He then formed a cult that is obsessed with cloning people (not sheep) and having sex. It’s a ton of fun.

What is NOT fun, is Colonia Dignidad. Maggie will tell you all about how former Nazi (but not really former) Paul Schaefer started a colony in Chile that ended up being a super terrifying cult and a prison camp for political dissenters during the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet. Schaefer controlled every aspect of his followers’ lives and also molested a bunch of kids, so he sounds like a peach.

We’re back this week with an all new episode full of adventure, science, and a few spiders. Hopefully, you’re cool with spiders. If not, here’s a trigger warning: we are going to discuss some disturbing history and some stuff about spiders in tea/hair/faces/etc.

This week, Maggie decided to research Olga of Kiev – the badass ruler who decimated a tribe of people under her protection after they brutally murdered her husband. We are taking a trip back to somewhere around 900 AD in the area that was known as Kievan Rus – so try to bear with us as we mispronounce names and probably get history wrong.

Back before we started the podcast and we were just discussing ideas, one of our ideas was to have a show that was just about discussing various urban legends. Since this is our podcast and we are allowed to do what we want, Dreia is going for an urban legend this week. She’s going to tell us the story of the family that was poisoned by a spider in their morning tea. Regardless of how science actually works, this story (and similar stories) tends to pop up every few years and make the social media rounds. So, always check your tea kettles!

Hey Friends!

Have you ever thought about what your last meal would be if you were on death row? We have, and we discuss our choices in this week’s episode – in addition to some pretty downright terrible stories.

Dreia is up first and she’s going to tell the story of Michael Anderson Sloan. Most would consider Sloan to be pretty damn lucky – as a career criminal, he got away with a few things before he was finally arrested and charged with rape and murder. He was sentenced to death but then his sentence was commuted to life imprisonment. While he could have lived a long life in prison, Sloan was not very bright, and his end came quickly, and very ironically.

While Dreia gave us a very lighthearted and fun story, Maggie has decided to go dark and talk about the kidnapping of Jaycee Dugard. If you lived under a rock for the 18 years that Jaycee was held captive by Phillip and Nancy Garrido, then you wouldn’t know that she had been kidnapped from her home (right in front of her stepfather and several witnesses) in California. She was raped continuously throughout her captivity and Phillip Garrido claims that it was part of a healing process for him. This is a pretty heavy story, so here is the obligatory trigger warning for rape, child molestation, kidnapping, and general idiocy.

Welcome to our Halloween Special!

We cannot believe we’ve been doing this for a year, already and as a special celebratory treat, we decided to upload an extra special, extra spooky episode for you all right ON HALLOWEEN!

Our special guest – who just so happens to be a lawyer (and Maggie’s husband) – Ben joins us and interjects throughout with his own brand of humor. He also did a little researching of his own when it came to Maggie’s topic this week.

So, Maggie has been really spooped out about the Mandela Effect ever since she heard of it a few months ago and she’s about to take you all down a rabbit hole of conspiracy theories and questioning your own reality. We’re only touching the very tip of the iceberg when it comes to the Mandela Effect because if Maggie was to go into the detail she wanted to – we wouldn’t see her for a few years.

Dreia is taking on Centralia, PA this week! This spooky town, built on a coal mine, has been on fire for the past thousand or so years (okay, maybe this is an exaggeration) and several of the residents still refuse to leave, despite all the carbon monoxide poisoning. Also, fun fact: the video game franchise and subsequent movie titled ‘Silent Hill’ is based around the town.

FRIENDS! Can you believe that it’s Cult Week AGAIN?!

That’s true, we’re talking cults once more and we’re also debating whether or not Atlantis is full of mermaids. The conversation is hecking riveting, so you might want to tune in.

Dreia is up first and she’s going to tell us all about The Church of the Last Testament and all of that glorious doomsday cult nonsense. Sergey Torop started this cult in the 1990s and taught his followers that he is the reincarnation of Jesus and that they can call him Vissarion. But, we can all call him bonkersauce. Surprise! This cult is all about oppressing women and the end of the world and they still exist… so that’s fun…

Maggie had a weird psychic connection with Dreia this week and chose a cult that also exists in today’s world, is also a doomsday cult (although we aren’t clear on the date), and also loves oppressing women. Either it’s a weird psychic connection, or all of these cults are the same. Who knows! Anyway, we’re going to talk about The Congregation for the Light, which is based in Manhattan, has about 200 members, and teaches people that they are going to live on a planet called Nay where they won’t have any stomachs.

Hello again, friends! We’ve got a fun show for you this week!

First up, Maggie is going to tell you the sad story of Mary Eleanor Bowes, the Countess of Strathmore who was unlucky in love despite being hell romantic. Bowes and her first husband didn’t get along and after he died, she was tricked into marrying a cartoon villain by the name of Andrew Robinson Stoney. Stoney chose to spend the eight years that he was married to Bowes by abusing her like crazy. Luckily, Bowes was able to escape and spend the rest of her life with her BFF Mary Morgan and her thousands of dogs – which is Maggie’s ideal retirement, in case you were wondering.

Dreia’s story is more fun and is about a pirate! Henry Every was born into a well-to-do family in England, but as a way of rebelling, he decided to become a pirate. He was great at it and even started a really cool rock band called Henry and the BOOkies. But, he did eventually disappear without a trace and it is unclear what actually happened to him.

These questions may seem weird, but they are 100% related to this week’s episode!

First up, Dreia is going to tell us all about Georgia Tan – the woman who made millions by selling children. Listen, this wasn’t reputable children sales, she was a sneaky so-and-so that caused enormous amounts of pain and suffering for countless children. I can’t get into more of a description of what she did, since I am literally filled with rage just thinking about it, so you’ll have to listen to the actual episode instead of reading the show notes.

On a more whimsical note, Maggie is fascinated with the story of the Man from Taured – which sounds like the store, but it’s not. This dude showed up in Haneda Airport in 1954 with a passport from a country that doesn’t exist, and everyone thought they were being punked. He then disappeared without a trace and the mystery became even bigger. Did the Man from Taured travel through a thin place? Are there alternate dimensions out there? Why are the green children from Woolpit green? We discuss these and several other mysteries this week – so you should probably listen and not just skip this episode because Dreia’s story hurts your feelings.

It’s CULT WEEK, bitch!

This week, we’re diving into two pretty terrible cults. And yes, we checked, they are literally cults.

Maggie covers NXIVM (pronounced like the heartburn medication – Nexium) and how it’s really not cool to brand people with your initials. If this sounds familiar to you, it’s because NXIVM made the news over the past few years for being a creepy and terrible sex cult that tried to pass itself off as empowering but was really a façade to help get the sexist and misogynistic leader Keith Raniere to coerce a bunch of rich women into having sex with him. Seriously, it’s gross. Also, Allison (NOT Alex) Mack was in it.

After talking about all the gross sex, Dreia covers a fairly recent and unknown cult – called The Baltimore Cult or Queen Antoinette’s Cult. It doesn’t have a totally official name, but it is an official cult – just ask anybody. When Ria Ramkissoon, a teenage mother, felt lost and afraid, she turned to Toni Sloan for support and guidance. Toni welcomed Ria into her cult with open arms and things got very dark after that. Not to give anything away, but this is one of the saddest stories we’ve covered on the podcast and it will hurt your feelings in a big way.

It’s Italy Week this week! Just kidding – that’s not really a thing. But, we did forget that we were supposed to do Cult Week this week and we did also accidentally both pick stories that take place in Italy, so it’s kind of Italy Week. Maybe?

Dreia is up first and she’s going to tell us all about The Vampire of Italy, also known as Vincenzo Verzeni. Vincenzo was the first recorded serial killer in Italian history and also was super gross. We’re not into kink shaming, but we are into shaming whatever it is that Vincenzo was into. Seriously, he’s the grossest.

We’re going to travel back to the Renaissance with Maggie and learn all about Giulia Tofana and her ‘cosmetic’ product Acqua Tofana. Not much is known about Giulia, but there are claims that she poisoned over 600 men in a 30-year period. She was the hero to unhappy wives throughout Italy and even Mozart claimed that he had been poisoned by Acqua Tofana.

Hello friends! We’ve missed you and we’re excited to be back again this week with an all new podcast episode for your listening pleasure.

Have you ever heard of the Vineland Boyz? No, they are not a children’s clothing store with a grape wearing overalls as a mascot – they’re actually a pretty violent gang that was at the center of several murder investigations in the early 2000s. Maggie will cover this during her story of how Juan Catalan was cleared of murder by being in the right place at the right time and got caught on film during the show Curb Your Enthusiasm while he was at a Dodgers game with his daughter.

Dreia is back this week with her second part of the story of how the women of Australia helped to shape its humble beginnings as she tells us about the Female Factory. This is a bunch of bananas and we are obviously outraged for the way these poor women were treated – being forced to go to spin class in 500 petticoats and then getting your bread taken away is horrendous. Plus, all the other stuff they were forced to endure may make you want to lead a kangaroo army to help with the revolt.
