Dreia is up first this week and she’s going to tell the story of the Dublin Whiskey Fires of 1845. During this period of time in Ireland, dinosaurs roamed the earth, pictures moved like in that wizard movie, and the fire department rode mastodons. Clearly – we know our history. This fire was massive and so was the amount of whiskey pouring through the streets of Dublin. Choices were made when it came to either drink the free booze or die and we’re torn one whether they were the right ones or not.

Maggie had the pleasure of researching the Lost Lady of the Amazon, otherwise known as Isabel Godin des Odonais. Isabel grew up a wealthy Spanish colonist in Riobamba, Peru (now Ecuador) who was obsessed with France. The man she fell in love with and later married was separated from her due to politics for 20 long years. This is the story of how Isabel sacrificed the lives of 42 people in order to traipse through the Amazon rainforest in her quest to be reunited with her husband.

A nun got murdered and the investigation revealed that a bunch of priests were cross dressing (no shame) and then molesting children (lots of shame) in what the Karens sipping their pinot grigio referred to as a cult.

Dreia is up first this week and she’s going to tell the story of how Heather Barnett and Elisa Clapp were murdered – their murders happened about ten years apart in two separate countries. Both women were killed in similar circumstances, but it was very difficult to link them, until the killer decided to be a creep on public transportation and the police zeroed in. Heather and Elisa got justice and their killer is now serving a life sentence in Italy.

Our next story is going to ruin your entire life, so buckle in. On October 21, 1966, a very large pile of waste from the coal mine in Aberfan, Wales slid down the side of the hill over the village and crashed into the elementary school in Aberfan. On that day, half of the children in the village perished in the most tragic and brutal way. So, Maggie is up first and she’s talking about the disappearance of Lauren Spierer. This case was all over the news back in 2011 when Lauren, a 20-year old college student at Indiana University went out to party with friends one night and then was never seen again. There’s a lot of weirdness surrounding this case and we may never actually find out what happened to Lauren.

Not only is Jessica hanging out with us, she also prepared a story this week! She’s going to talk about the death of Marilyn Munroe and the conspiracies that surround it. Did Marilyn complete suicide or did she actually know too much? Is her death tied to the Kennedys?

Finally, Dreia is going to talk about the disappearance of D’Wan Sims. According to his mother Dawanna Harrison, D’Wan disappeared while the two of them were out shopping at the mall. Unfortunately, Dawanna’s story changed several times while police were investigating, and the four-year-old boy was never found. Although, in the last few weeks, a man has resurfaced and claims to be D’Wan. Not much is known about this plot twist, but here’s hoping it turns out happily.

Happy New Year, friends! We hope 2020 is looking great for all of you and is full of all the best things.

So, quick disclaimer: we started using a new editing software and Maggie couldn’t figure out how to get the intro music into the episode this week – so no music for you today. Sorry, but also, not sorry.

Also, we are going to talk about the Cecil Hotel. This is our way of ending 2019 with some fun and maybe some spoops. We’re also trying out something new in that we’re going completely unstructured this week – nobody goes first, and we did all the same research. We swear it’s going to be fun for you to listen to.

For those of you who have never heard of the Cecil Hotel (but come on, really? Black Dahlia, Richard Ramirez, Jack Unterweger?!) – it’s a hotel that was built in Los Angeles just before the Great Depression hit and it has since built up a reputation for dark occurrences happening inside of its walls. Elizabeth Short (the Black Dahlia) was rumored to have been seen there just before her death, Richard Ramirez (the Nightstalker) lived there for a period of time during his peak serial killing days, and Jack Unterweger also stayed at the Cecil Hotel while reporting on murders that he committed himself.

Let’s talk about cults, baby!

Remember how we can’t count? Well, that’s fine because our Christmas present (Solstice present, Hanukah present, or whatever winter holiday you celebrate present) to you is CULT WEEK!

Maggie is up first and, instead of telling you about raccoons eating grapes, she’s going to talk about the Rajneeshees. Just kidding, she’s also going to talk about raccoons eating grapes because it’s probably relevant. So, the Rajneeshees were bananas and were all about sex and taking over the small town of Antelope, Oregon. The Antelopians were not all about that life and what ensued was a passive aggressive war that ended in aggressive aggressive and some mass poisoning. Nobody died, so that’s really cool.

Dreia’s cult is all about people dying because she’s talking about the Church of Euthanasia. The leader of the Church of Euthanasia is like a really dark Greta Thunberg and this leader is super into saving the world through the extermination of the human race. The motto of this cult is “Save the planet, kill yourself” or something ridiculous like that. We don’t endorse this cult, but we do endorse finding ways to reduce your carbon footprint like recycling and riding your bike to work. Please do not kill yourself for the sake of the planet.

Look. I know last week was a bunch of bummers and you’re probably so sick of us being the worst, but we’re bringing you some new bummers this week. We’re not apologizing for it.

Dreia is telling us the story this week of Glen Tripp. Glen idolized D.B. Cooper and wanted to follow in his footsteps as a successful plane hijacker. Glen managed to hijack one plane but was caught. On his second try, his story ended very sadly. We don’t love it.

Maggie’s story is going to take us all the way to the wealthy part of Long Island as she discusses the Long Island Serial Killer – or the LISK. This horrible excuse for a human terrorized Long Island for years by murdering sex workers and dumping their bodies on the beaches of the area. This case still remains unsolved and it’s pretty frustrating.

Maggie is going to talk about the disappearance of Alissa Turney. Alissa disappeared from her home on the very last day of her junior year of high school. Her creepy stepfather claims that she ran away and left a note indicating that she was running away and her case was not investigated for several years after her disappearance. It is believed that Michael Turney (Alissa’s stepfather) was involved in her disappearance, but police do not have enough evidence to prosecute him. On another unhappy note, Dreia is going to tell us the story of the Tuskegee Syphilis Study in Alabama in the 1930s. In this study, the United States Government exploited a total of 600 impoverished black men. The purpose of the study was to observe the effects of untreated syphilis, but the subjects of this study were not informed of this plan. The study lasted for a total of forty years and the men never received treatment for the disease, even though the cure for syphilis had been discovered in the 1940s. This is truly a garbage story and we have a lot of feelings about it.

Welcome to the official anniversary edition of We Are the Worst!

On the day this comes out into the world (December 3, 2019), it will be almost an official year of releasing podcast episodes. Literally, we are one day off from our official anniversary, so it’s fine. To celebrate, we have decided to do the exact same thing we do every week – which is drink and talk about depressing stories, so buckle in and enjoy!

Dreia’s telling us the story of the disappearance of Dennis Reynolds. Dennis was a 24-year-old man living in Litchfield, Illinois in 1978. He went to visit his girlfriend during a blizzard and was then never seen or heard from again. Reynolds disappeared during the time John Wayne Gacy was active as a serial killer, so could there be a connection between the two?

Even though John Wayne Gacy’s story is what attracted Maggie to true crime and all things terrible, she isn’t covering it this week. Our psychic connection just didn’t come through this week, friends. Sorry about that.

Instead, Maggie is going to revisit an old favorite that we’ve archived due to sound quality. Dorian Corey was the matriarch of the House of Corey in New York City Ball Culture back in the 1980s and 90s. Unfortunately, Corey succumbed to AIDS and passed away in the early 1990s, but upon searching her apartment, a literal skeleton in Corey’s apartment was found. In this episode, we discuss the mystery behind Corey’s relationship with Robert Worley and what could have happened to Worley.

Welcome to We Are the Worst! This week, we are sandwiching a bit of terrible between a little bit of fun – think of it as a sandwich with all of the meats that you hate!

Maggie is up first and she’s got a story about a terrible incel piece of garbage named Elliot Rodger. Elliot thought that he was entitled to sex and relationships with women and that he didn’t have to put any effort into actually getting them. Elliot was wrong. Unfortunately, he didn’t like being wrong, so he decided to kill a bunch of people before then killing himself. We have no jokes about this story because it sucks.

We do have some jokes about the ULTRA Samurai Taira no Masakado, who in the 900s was the strongest of the Samurai in Japan and also was super nice to poor people. Unfortunately for him, his uncles were not fans and had him murdered by beheading. Taira no Masakado is now a ghostly head that haunts folks in Japan who make fun of him or build a shrine for him that is too small.
