Not all ‘men of the cloth’ sent from England 1820-50. To what was after-all the most remotest mission on the map. New Zealand. Kept it in their pants. When the harshness of the environment became clear. Weren't happy at the ‘agreed’ pay level. With an extremely long leech. Some missionaries used their new found – hard earned -freedom to indulge themselves. In sins of the flesh. Succumbed to the evils of the demon drink. Supplemented church incomes.

The blowhard Irishman Tom Long was New Zealand’s official hangman 1877-1905. This hard-case was also a habitual drunk who ran-up numerous misdemean crimes. More than once ended-up in jail himself. A public menace who got chased out of pubs & towns by locals and police alike. This is a great black comedy.

Listen to the testimonies of the first European visitors & settlers to New Zealand regarding the practice of cannibalism by Maori. Learn that cannibalism in pre-European New Zealand was more widespread than you probably thought was the case. Wasn’t just confined to adult men and losses in battle. Be warned. This is a grisly episode. The sources and background on each witness are provided. Their books are in most New Zealand Libraries. Along with dozens of other books with similar statements by settlers, explorers, officials etc alike. The recounts here are far from being selective or atypical.
Note: I have Anglicised and modernised some words to make it more listenable. Particularly for overseas listeners not familiar with the Maori language.

Three attempts to kill and injure between 1934-35. One of them successful. All of them employing the tempting rouge; an anonymous box of chocolates appearing in the post. Laced with deadly poison. Kicking-off in Blackball 1934.

At first, observers thought they were dealing with a meteorite. Only when titanium balls began turning-up around Ashburton, Mid Canterbury. It became clear that what they were dealing with. Those space balls. Were manmade. Bits of Russian Venus Probe Kosmos 482. The main body of which is still up there! Due to do a repeat tour 2025, 2026ish. Note: You can see the balls in person at the Ashburton Aviation Museum.

Believe you me. The crime of undertaking New Zealand’s largest bank robbery. Is but the starting point for this story. You’ll also hear about betrayal, intimidation, prison breaks, police corruption and even murder.

The suave Brit Jonathan Powell arrived from no-where on-to the Auckland social scene 1998. Going-on to invest ‘family money’ from back home into a yacht charter & luxury car rental businesses. Undertake the multi-million dollar purchase and up-grade of The Waiheke Island Resort. His CV read like an entry in Peerages. Public School Education. Time in the British Army. Bodyguard for Prince Charles. Diplomatic Security. Friends in high places. All for his charade to coming tumbling down in the most gruesome fashion.

In September 1865. New Zealand’s largest unsolved armed robbery occurred on the West Coast of New Zealand at the peak of the Gold Rush. If you like a good Western. You’ll love this number. Oodles of intrigue.

Today’s episode I recount the horrendous horrors of the shipwrecked ‘Invercauld’ sailors. In May of 1864 the Scottish vessel ‘Invercauld’ travelling between Melbourne & Peru sailed directly into Auckland Island in the subantarctic Southern Ocean. 19 men made it off the vessel with just the clothes they were standing in. Their struggle to survive in the face of appalling conditions. The desperate measures they were reduced to on one of the most desolate and isolated places on the planet. Is an amazing & tragic one. A textbook lesson in ‘How Not to Command’
