America is facing two huge crises in its healthcare system: 1) the primary care shortage and 2) the general public’s diminishing trust in healthcare professionals. Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (COMS) are leading the charge to meet this primary care shortage challenge.
Dr. Robert Cain, DO, President and Chief Executive Officer of the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine explains how our aging demographics, physician retirements, and poor compensation in primary care present challenges in balancing increased demand for care in an aging population with the need to increase incentives for new medical students to become general practice physicians.
This is made worse by the declining trust in the healthcare profession, due primarily to the reduction in quality of doctor-patient relationships caused by requirements for increased corporate profitability.
