  • Episode 374: When You Comin Back Red Rocker?

Show Notes Episode 374: When You Comin’ Back Red Rocker

This week Host Dave Bledsoe angrily tells the bartender that they CAN’T throw him out of the bar because he is already leaving! (Turns out, they could and did.) On the show this week we tell you how Sammy replaced Dave, then Dave replaced Sammy and some guy named Gary replaced Dave and then Sammy came back but left again. (Van Halen was a FUN band to work in!)

Along the way we hear a tale of sadness from Dave about how he had no friends as a kid. (Kind of like now, but for entirely different reasons, like Dave is an asshole.) Then we dive right into the very odd life of Sammy Hagar pre Van Halen. (Are there Aliens? You bet there are!) and how Eddie and Sammy’s friendship ended. (Hint: Badly) Then we talk about reunions that never happened or happened and ended. (Again: Badly.)

Our Sponsor this week is Celebrity Branded Alcoholic Beverage, its liquor with a famous person’s name on the bottle! We open with Ed and Sammy on the Today show in 1986 and close with Sweet Zuni’s bar order!

  • Episode 373: David and Eddie Had Had It Already by the Summer of '85

Show Notes Episode 373: David and Eddie Had Had It Already By the Summer of 85

This week Host Dave Bledsoe climbs up on stage to do his famous karaoke version of Just A Gigolo (we hate to admit, it’s GOOD) only to bust the seam in the ass of pants. (Sadly, he just kept right on singing) On the show this week we tell you the tale of one great band and two massive egos: David Lee Roth and Eddie Van Halen. (You all know how THAT ended.)

Along the way we discover how Dave’s dad (our Dave, not the cool one) accidentally introduced a chubby pre-teen to rock and roll and regretted it ever after. (Just the first of many regrets the poor man would have over his son.) Then we dive right into the story of Edward and Alex Van Halen, two little Dutch Boys and one kid from Indianna with a sound system that made rock and roll history. (We really owe it all to the sound system) We give you the story of the rise of Van Halen and then we tell you how drugs, booze and towering egos brought it all crashing down.

Our Sponsor this week is Diamond Dave’s School of Dance, we can’t teach you how to DANCE but we can teach you how look fucking COOL on stage! We open with Diamond Dave being VERY DIamond Dave and close with OAR waving Brenda and Eddie goodbye!

  • Episode 372: Video Home System Killed the Betamax Star

Episode 372: Video Home System Killed the Betamax Star

This week Host Dave Bledsoe gets all nostalgic with some old home videos only to discover something unspeakably horrible on a tape labeled “David’s 12th Birthday” (Actual footage of his 12th birthday, god he was a fat little kid!) On the show this week we tell the tale of the most brutal conflict of the 1980’s, the war between VHS and Beta (So…Much…Blood)

Along the way we discover why Dave isn’t allowed in any movie theaters anymore. (It would be better if it were a Pee Wee Herman thing) Then we dive right into the creation of home video, from its absurdly British beginnings to the mighty Titan that was Sony striding across the land. (Spoiler: Sony loses). Then we dig into General Curtis LeMay’s porn preferences for reasons never truly explained, only to veer back on topic with the tale of two tape formats and the brief but bitter fight over which one would dominate the world. (It turns out to be the one that is slightly cheaper.) We wrap up with a delightful but completely irrelevant tangent on why people called Montgomery Ward department stores Monkey Ward. (Are there monkeys involved? You’ll have to tune in to find out, or, you know, Google it.)

Our Sponsor this week is Mondo Fast Eddie’s Home Video, we got the tapes, you gotta have the machines. We open the show NEC’s brand new video cassette machine and close with Lucy May Walker eulogizing the Radio Star.

  • Episode 371: The Dog's Name Was Harvey (Pt 2 of the Summer of Sam)

Show Notes Episode 371: “The Dog’s Name Was Harvey” Pt 2 of the Summer of Sam

This week Host Dave Bledsoe decides to spend a little time at the Dog Park, which is a very disreputable strip club in Bayonne New Jersey where hopefully they haven’t heard of him. (They didn't extend him credit.) On the show this week we wrap up the Summer of Sam with part two, the arrest, confession and trial of David Berkowitz. Then we get to the good stuff about the Devil! (Satan insists he would NEVER hang out with a loser like Berkowitz.)

Along the way we learn why cops give people tickets when they would rather be watching porn. (Everybody has a boss!) Then we dive right into how the Summer Sam finally ended because one woman nagged the cops into actually doing their damn jobs! (That is usually how that happens.) We learn about David’s motivations for killing (girls didn’t like him) and how a dog named Harvey told him to kill. (Harvey insists he would never hang out with a loser like Berkowitz.) We take you through the bullshit stories that Berkowitz spun to get out of the death penalty that NO ONE BELIEVED. (Except for this one guy named Maury.) Then we take you down the dark path of conspiracy theory that Maury Terry took and leave you just as disappointed as Maury was in the end.

Our Sponsor this week is David’s Doggie Day Care, where the dogs tell US what to do! We open the show with news footage from the day after Berkowitz’s capture and close with Matt Tregortha singing an Elliot Smith song about Sam.

Show Notes Episode 370: The Wicked King Wicker Part 1 of the Summer of Sam

This week Host Dave Bledsoe decided to take his beloved out to a popular make out spot for a little heavy petting. (Meaning he is sitting in the park alone drinking Jameson out of a brown paper bag, again.) On the show this week, we continue our series about NYC in the 1970’s with part one of The Summer of Sam!

Along the way we discover that all the adults in Dave’s young life thought it was hilarious the way he freaked out over people getting violently killed in movies. (He peed himself!!) Then we dive right into the murders committed by one David Berkowitz, AKA Beelzebub, AKA The Wicked King Wicker, AKA The Chubby Behemoth. You know him best as The Son of Sam! From his first kill in the Bronx to the last in Brooklyn we give you the Just the Facts. (The good stuff comes next week in part two!)

Our Sponsor this week is Dave, do you have a Dave in your life? If you do, you know how great Dave’s are, unlike David’s who SUCK! We open the show with the women of New York telling it like it is and close with Amir Darzi who just wants to be your everything!

  • Episode 369: We Really Had A Blackout

Show Notes Episode 369: We Really Had A Blackout

This week Host Dave Bledsoe tries to remember if he paid the ConEd bill or if he is about to experience his own mini-blackout. (Again) On the show this week we head back forty five years to 1977 and that time ConEd decided to turn all the fucking lights out in New York City. (Again.)

Along the way we learn how Dave used to live in the kinds of places where the power goes on the regular. (Turns out, you DO have to pay that electric bill!) Then we dive right into the night of July 13th 1977 in New York City. (The Met sucked as always) and how the gross failure of the Consolidated Edison caused all the lights to go out for 24 hours. When that happened, things got…exciting? (In the OH MY GOD WE ARE ALL GOING TO DIE! Kind of way)

NEXT WEEK get ready for the Chubby Behemoth: we kick off a two-parter on the Son of Sam!

Our Sponsor this week is The Flashlight In the Kitchen Drawer, who wants you to know it won’t be IGNORED! We open the show with a little audio documentary of the blackout and close with Danny Vaugh trying to cope with memory loss.

  • Episode 368: Welcome to Fear City

Show Noted Episode 368: Welcome to Fear City

This week Host Dave Bledsoe issues a dire warning that New York City is on the verge of slipping into a hellscape dystopia all because of this unreasonable demand he settle these bartabs. (The Bartenders told him to “Drop Dead”) On the show this week we kick off a month of shows about the Greatest Goddamn City in the World during The Worst Decade Ever, NYC in the 1970’s!

Along the way we learn how Dave earnestly believed that Oklahoma City Oklahoma was a booming metropolis and the height of urban life. (He was ten years old so we guess we can excuse it.) From there we dive right into the history of how the Big Apple rotted during the late 60’s and got all wormy in the 1970’s! (It’s all just protein people!) From the crime wave to the economic collapse we lay out just where things went and how no one was willing to do a damn thing about it! (Baghdad wasn’t the first city Donald Rumsfeld had a pivotal role in destroying!) Then we discover that as bad as things were, New York City in the 70’s was still the Center of the Universe for all the Cool People!

Our sponsor this week is The Bad Old Days, the tool for the politician needing a quick distraction from all the shit they are supposed to be fixing! We open with people on the streets of Fear City and close with LB Cooper dreaming of the Big Apple!

  • Episode 367: Who Could've Seen This Coming?

Show Notes Episode 367: Who Could’ve Seen It Coming

This week Host Dave Bledsoe would like to turn the show over to a woman and let her say what needs to be said, but all the women he knows either hate him or are too busy doing important shit to talk on some dumb podcast. (Mostly they just hate him.) On the show this week we keep it really simple, we talk about the people who worked so hard to take your right away in the history of anti-abortion. (You think we are gonna talk about Canadian Tuxedos after THIS week?)

We are keeping the notes simple this week. Our Sponsor is My Mailbox, in a Blue State, and it is here to be YOUR mailbox if you need something you can’t have sent to your actual mailbox. We open with theBill Hicks tossing his hat in the political ring and close with Brass Against Taking The Power Back.

  • Episode 366: Full Metal Lunchbox

Show Notes Episode 366: Full Metal Lunch Box

This week Host Dave Bledsoe is brown bagging it for lunch, meaning he is drinking cheap scotch out of a brown paper bag in the park. (Again) On the show this week we tell you about the Ultimate Status Symbol of the 1970’s School House: the lunch box!

Along the way we learn that young Dave had a very disturbing lunch box when he lived in the Deep South. (Though he denies it, he definitely had a Klan Lunch Box) Then we dive right into that most American of Americana, the Lunch Pails that built America! From their humble beginnings as a container for carcinogens and cookies to their heyday as a metal masters of a growing nation, men carried a god damn lunch pail and it was filled with love! (And strong black coffee!) Then we explain how the Baby Boom built a lucrative market for a kerosene lamp subsidiary to make millions from all those privileged children. (Boomers had it all!) Finally we talk about all the wonderful things on our lunch boxes when we were kids and why you had such cheap plastic crap. (Hint: Capitalism!) We also do some thinly veiled allegory that is relevant to life in today’s United States.

Our Sponsor this week is Seltzer Kings Branded Lunch Boxes, all your favorite podcast hosts so long as they are Dave and you don’t expect them to be a real thing. We open with a museum full of 70’s nostalgia and close with Tim Tymo issuing a warning to all bullies.

  • Episode 365: The Last Barman Poet

Show Notes Episode 365: The Last Barman Poet

This week Host Dave Bledsoe struggles with the reality he will never own his own bar, and the best he will ever have is a tab at one. (Which will be constantly overdue) On the show this week take a look at a Tom Cruise movie that had American flipping bottles and breaking glasses all over their basement bars: 1988’s Cocktail. (Why? There is no why.)

Along the way we learned that instead of using an unexpected financial windfall to better his life, Dave just spent it all on booze. (Same as it ever was.) Then we dive right into the backstory of a movie that no one thought was very good but everyone watched anyway. We learn how a gritty commentary on capitalism and consumer culture was “Disneyfied” into a banal Reagan era blockbuster. Finally we explain why everyone loved the move and how the soundtrack is an abomination and deserves a trial in the Hague for crimes against humanity. (Kind of like this podcast)

Our Sponsor this week is The Slippery Nipple, the bar that only served naughty named cocktails. We open the show with Brian Flanagan orating from his bartop and close with Bill Dahl, his powerful karaoke voice.
